OSWEGO, N.Y. -Â Junior Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) scored a game-high 17 points off the bench, but it was not enough as the Oneonta men's basketball team fell 58-51 to No. 13 Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 13-8 and 9-5 in the SUNYAC, while the Lakers move to 20-2 and 14-1 in the conference.Â
"They are an outstanding team who has been playing well lately," head coach Cameron Conover stated. "To hold a team to 58 points when they have been averaging 104 points in their last five games takes a lot of effort. Our guys left it all out there, and I am proud of them."
After the Lakers tied 4-4, Oswego rattled off an 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead at 11:29. Williams answered with a three-pointer to break the streak, but Oswego's Jeremiah Sparks followed with an inside score. Freshman Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) made a layup at 10:28 to make it 14-9. Oswego pushed to a double-digit lead following a putback from Cam Chance and then a fastbreak triple from Klaeb Cook at 9:02.Â
The Lakers' Devin Green converted a mid-range jumper at 7:48, and then neither side scored until Joey Rowback drained a three at 4:21. Two straight baskets by sophomore Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) brought the game within ten points, and a layup from senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) made it 24-16 with 3:21 left in the half. A Williams three-pointer followed another layup from Brown with 21 seconds remaining to cut the Oswego lead to 27-21. Devin Green scored in the nine seconds to keep the Lakers up by nine.Â
Both sides traded baskets to start the second half, and the Lakers built back to a ten-point lead following an inside score from Chance at 11:13. Oswego's Jamal Achille added a layup to make it 43-31, but Williams sank a triple at 10:16.Â
Castillo used an and-one to keep the Red Dragons within striking distance, and then layups from Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and Brown made it 49-41 with 5:51 remaining. Back-to-back threes from Ortale and Williams made it a four-point game at the 1:46 mark. The Oswego defense held in, causing an Oneonta turnover the following possession, and then Sparks blocked a Williams shot attempt with 33 seconds left. A final pair of Lakers' free throws secured the Oswego victory.Â
Williams shot 4-of-6 from three-point range and recorded a double-double with ten rebounds. He also made four assists. Brown added 12 points, six boards, two steals, and one block. Derice finished with ten points, seven rebounds, and a block.Â
Sparks led Oswego with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Anderson scored 12 points with six boards and two steals.Â
Oneonta looks to bounce back when they return home to face Brockport on Fri. Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Dewar Arena.Â
