ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Five Red Dragons scored in double digits in a gritty Friday night matchup as the Oneonta men's basketball team defeated Brockport 82-67 in Dewar Arena. Oneonta jostles for playoff seeding and moves to 14-8 overall and 10-5 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles stand at 17-5 and 12-3 in conference play.Â
"Our guys played tough tonight. That was an extremely physical game, and both teams competed hard," said head coach Cameron Conover. "I am very proud of our team's effort. Everyone stepped up for a tough forty minutes."
Sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) accounted for the Red Dragons' opening five points, and then a pair of free throws from sophomore Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) put Oneonta ahead 7-0. Wooden found senior Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) for an alley-op dunk at 17:30 as the Red Dragons took a nine-point lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 run finished off with a fastbreak score by Tony Arnold at 14:37.Â
Brockport cut the Oneonta lead to 11-8 following a mid-range jump by Mekhi Beckett, but back-to-back triples from junior Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) and Wooden put the Red Dragons up by nine. Freshman Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) netted four-straight points as Oneonta took a ten-point lead with 7:22 left in the half. Wooden scored inside, and then a Brown steal led to another Wooden three-pointer at 6:10 to make it 28-17. A Brockport 8-0 run brought the game within five points until Williams sank a long-range three to beat the shot clock. Wooden converted an and-one at 1:47, and a final free throw from freshman Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) made it 37-31 at the break.
Brockport cut the lead to two points at 18:02. Oneonta used a 9-0 with five points from senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel). The Red Dragons continued to roll and took a 13-point lead following a jumper by Williams at 10:56. Both teams got in the bonus early, and it became a free throw contest, which Oneonta used to build up to a 64-50 lead. Ortale hit a trey at 7:05, and Wooden, Castillo, and Knox baskets pushed the Red Dragons up 73-55. Brockport could never pull within single digits as Oneonta cruised to the win in the final minutes.
Wooden finished with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting with three triples. Castillo scored a career-high 13 points off the bench and grabbed seven rebounds. Williams added 12 points, while Ortale and Derice each recorded 11.Â
Arnold led Brockport with 25 points and eight boards, while David Grady added 12.Â
"Tomorrow will be another good game, and I expect our guys to be ready for a strong Geneseo team."Â
