ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's basketball team capped off its final home weekend with a 61-51 win over Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. Three Red Dragons scored double digits as Oneonta moves to 15-8 overall and 11-5 in the SUNYAC. The Knights fall to 10-13 and 6-9 following the loss.
"It's always great to win on senior day! We didn't play as well as would have liked, but we made enough plays to secure the victory," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We have three special seniors and we will miss Joe, Daniel, and Mike next year. I have really enjoyed coaching them and we'll appreciate the time we have left together."
Geneseo took an 11-8 lead following a Harrison Dignan three-pointer at 12:40. Sophomore Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) scored inside to cut the lead to one, but a layup by Ethan St. Lucia gave Geneseo a slight advantage. Junior Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) converted an and-one to tie 13-13 at 11:07, and the teams traded leads until the Red Dragons rattled off a 13-0 run to go ahead 28-17 with 5:56 remaining. The Knights then closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to make it 28-23 at the break.
Brown scored the opening basket of the second, and then sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) drained a triple at 18:02 to push the Oneonta lead to ten. Geneseo's Raymond Grabowski responded with a three, and a Dignan jumper made it 33-28. Wooden hit another three-pointer, but the Knights kept the game within single digits. Two baskets from senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) and another from Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) pushed the Oneonta lead to 12.
Williams scored at 11:40, then threw a pass to Ortale for an alley-oop dunk to give the Red Dragons a 48-36 lead. Oneonta led by as much as 16 and held a double-digit lead until Geneseo's Cole Kattan scored on the fastbreak. A Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) three-pointer at 1:24 gave Oneonta some breathing room, and a final dunk from Derice finished off the Knights.
Brown earned a double-double with 12 points and a career-high ten rebounds. Williams scored 12 points off the bench, while Derice added 11 and seven rebounds. Ortale netted eight points with a team-high nine boards and five assists.
Dignan and St. Lucia each scored 11 points, while Dignan grabbed nine rebounds.
