ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team was outscored 11-1 in the second half as the Red Dragons fell 20-7 to RPI on Thursday's season-opener. Oneonta moves to 0-1 with the loss, while RPI goes to 1-0.
The Engineers started hot, scoring ten seconds into the first quarter when Rylie Maready found Megan Shay following the draw control. RPI scored five goals within six minutes of playing time, with Sophie Goddard netting three. The Red Dragons got on the board when sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) picked up junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to make it 6-1. RPI responded at 1:10 on a Lauren DeLeo free position, but senior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) found the back of the net before the end of the quarter.Â
After RPI scored another goal to start the second, Oneonta scored three straight, with Foiles adding two more for a hat trick. The Red Dragons' defense played a standout quarter, and junior Erynn Rocovich (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) caused an Engineers' turnover at 6:57 to eventually lead to a goal from junior Jaclyn Jackowski (Commack, NY/Commack) to cut the RPI lead to 8-5.Â
Jackowski caused a turnover and passed to senior Nicolette Lospitalier (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale). She then picked up junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) for the woman-up goal at 5:08. RPI's Shay added one more goal before the half.
RPI shut out Oneonta in the third quarter while scoring six goals. The Red Dragons struggled to get an attacking possession. The Engineers scored five more times in the fourth, but Mancini picked up one more goal at 4:53.Â
Foliles led the team with three goals and took seven shots on goal. Mancini scored twice with one assist. Moore recorded two assists with four groundballs. Junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) (0-1) made 12 saves in goal.Â
Sophie Goddard scored seven goals with two assists, and all ten shots were on-goal attempts. Shay added five goals and four groundballs. In total, eight Engineers found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Jenny Canfield (1-0) made 12 saves in the win.
Oneonta next hosts St. Lawrence on Sat. Mar. 4 at 3:30 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.Â
