ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Javen Flowers-Smith (Atlanta, GA/Pembroke Pines Charter) led the Oneonta men's basketball team with 31 points as the Red Dragons defeated the Wells College Express 101-53 on Monday evening. Oneonta led 44-21 in the first half and did not look back in the second to move to 2-2 overall, while Wells falls to 1-5.Â
"I am proud of our team's effort tonight. We had a collective focus that started with a defensive mindset, and on the offensive end, we did an excellent job of making the extra pass, said head coach Cameron Conover. "25 assists in a 40-minute game is a lot of assists. We had a lot of good performances and will continue to work and build on this from tonight. I look forward to practice tomorrow."
The Express took a 4-3 following a jumper from Chase Welch, but senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) drained a triple off a Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) pass to go up by two.Â
Junior Cakeb Brown scored inside to make it 8-4 before a Welch layup cut the lead to two. Oneonta responded with a 6-0 run to lead 14-6. Wells kept the game close before junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored two inside layups to push the Red Dragons' advantage to 21-10. Terrace Clayton-Murphy converted a pair of free throws to bring the score within single digits, but layups from freshman Brendan Armour (Rockaway Point, NY/St. Edmund Prep) and sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) brought it back to an 11-point lead.
After James Lucey hit a triple at 5:44 to cut the lead to 28-21, Brown scored inside to start a 16-0 to close out the half. Sophomore Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) ended with a buzzer-beater layup to make it a 23-point game at the break.
Oneonta carried over into the second with a 5-0 run with three points from Flowers-Smith and a layup by senior Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland). Wooden netted a layup at 15:00 to make it 57-25, and then another score from Flowers-Smith pushed the lead to 34. Â
Flowers-Smith hit three-straight three-pointers in a one-minute span to push Oneonta ahead 68-30. Hill converted inside, and another Flowers-Smith triple gave the Red Dragons a 41-point lead.
The Oneonta lead continued growing, and Teaney hit a three to push it to 88-45. Freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) converted an and-one before a Luke De Gannes (Burlington, Ontario/Tennessee Prep) layup and a three from senior Seidina Doukoure (Bronx, NY/The MacDuffie School). Sylla gave Oneonta a hundred points following a three-pointer with 42 seconds.Â
Flowers-SMith shot 11-of-22 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range. He added five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Hill recorded a double-double behind 14 points and 11 rebounds. Wooden scored 11 points with six assists and two steals. Brown added ten points and four rebounds.Â
In total, Oneonta had 25 assists and held a 45-26 rebound advantage.Â
Clayton-Murphy led the Express with 15 points and four rebounds, while Welch added ten. John Bangel added 12 points off the bench.
Oneonta next opens SUNYAC play at Brockport on Fri. Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
