BROCKPORT, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta men's basketball team fell 87-76 to Brockport in the SUNYAC opener on Friday evening. The Golden Eagles (5-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) outscored the Red Dragons (2-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) 39-26 in the first half with five players scoring in double digits.Â
Oneonta took a 5-0 lead following four-straight points by sophomore Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). Brockport responded with a 13-0 run with three consecutive three-pointers. Junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) broke the streak with an inside layup to cut the lead to 13-7. The Golden Eagles rattled off a 6-0 run before sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) converted a pair of free throws.Â
Brockport's Zachary Rice drained a three at 10:11 to push the lead to 15. Sophomore Javen Flowers-Smith (Atlanta, GA/Pembroke Pines Charter) scored inside and hit a trey at 7:27 to lessen the lead to 24-14. Scores from Caquan Wester and Jacob Oka brought the Golden Eagles' lead to 14 until junior Pete Laidley, Jr. hit a three-pointer at 5:52. After some back-and-forth baskets, Castillo got the game to 37-26, but a layup by Brockport's Tony Arnold scored a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 13-point lead at halftime.Â
The Red Dragons came out strong to start the half on a 6-0 run to bring the game within single digits. Senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) hit a jumper to make it 41-34. Laidley hit a pair of free throws to make it a five-point contest before Wester sank a triple at 15:17. Flowers-Smith answered with a three, but Jevonny Brown hit a three to make it 47-39. Hill bounced back with a three-pointer, but Brockport answered with a 9-0 run.Â
An 8-0 Once again, Oneonta's run made it a single-digit game, but Brockport held off any Oneonta run.Â
The Golden Eagles eventually took a 19-point lead. Oneonta had final three-pointers from seniors Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) and Seidina Doukoure (Bronx, NY/The MacDuffie School) but could not surmount the deficit. Â
Flowers-Smith led the team with 23 points and three steals. Castillo added 15 points and three rebounds.Â
Oneonta looks to bounce back tomorrow against Geneseo at 1 p.m.
