ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team couldn't climb back from an early deficit and dropped their non-conference match to Skidmore, 3-2, Wednesday evening. Graduate student
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) and senior
Molly Geyer (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) found the back of the cage for the Red Dragons as the team now sits at 5-7 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 5-6.
Skidmore scored the first goal 20 seconds into the contest with a shot from CC Wetter. The Thoroughbreds tallied their second goal off a penalty corner at 11:53 as Mia Angwin redirected Kayla Hassett's shot into the cage. Â
Oneonta got on the board in the early moments of the second period off a penalty stroke. Fleming took the shot and scored on the left side of the cage, putting the team down a goal entering halftime.
After a scoreless third period, Skidmore made it 3-1 with a goal from Beth Yorns at 49:27, however the Red Dragons brought it back to a one-goal game two minutes later. Oneonta pushed the ball down in front of the cage to Fleming who got a shot off that was saved, and after a scuffle for the ball Geyer tipped it into the cage. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons were unable to record a shot in the final nine minutes and the Thoroughbreds held on to the win.
Sophomore
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) played 45 minutes and finished with four saves while teammate
Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) appeared for the whole second period and recorded four saves. Victoria Bodnar ended with five saves for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore outshot Oneonta, 17-9, and had a 9-6 advantage on penalty corners. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday for a SUNYAC road contest against Geneseo at 3 pm.
