ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Red Dragons picked up their third straight win with a 67-46 victory over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon in Dewar Arena. Three players scored in double digits as Oneonta moves to 13-6 overall and 9-3 in the SUNYAC. The Bengals fall to 1-17 and 0-11 in the conference.Â
"We played better defensive tonight, and offensively we took good shots and shared the ball," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We are happy with the win and look to improve next week."
Oneonta jumped to a 7-0 lead before Buffalo State got on the board. Afterward, the Red Dragons scored four unanswered to take an 11-2 lead at 12:29. Buffalo State's Matt Parkinson converted a pair of free throws to cut the lead to seven. Senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) found Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) for an alley-opp dunk at 11:46 to push the advantage to 13-4. Parkinson scored inside to keep the game within single digits, but a three-pointer from junior Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) put Oneonta ahead 16-6. Layups from Ortale and Derice pushed the Red Dragons' lead to 14 before Parkinson drained a triple at 9:44 to make it 20-9.Â
The Bengals netted four straight before sophomore Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) hit a triple at 7:13. Buffalo state used a 10-0 run to tie at 23-23, but Ortale scored inside to retake the lead. Sophomore Dylan Craft (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) scored off a Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) assist, and Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) netted an inside basket to make it 29-23 at 1:14. A final jump shot from the Bengal's Tyron Smith made it 29-24 at the half.Â
Oneonta got rolling in the second when Williams picked up Ortale for an alley-opp at 19:51. The Red Dragons continued to hold a comfortable lead, and a 10-0 Oneonta lead pushed the Red Dragons' lead to 14 points. Layups from Buffalo State's Robert Richards and Kevin Carpenter cut the lead to 43-33, but Williams sank a trey at 12:23 to prevent a run.Â
Oneonta never gave up the lead and led by 20 following an inside score from freshman Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds). Down the stretch, freshman Ahmed Toure (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) scored to give Oneonta its largest lead at 67-44 with a minute remaining.Â
Ortale finished with 18 points, nine boards, three assists, two steals, and a block while shooting 9-of-16. Brown scored a season-high 14 points with five rebounds. Derice netted 11 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Castillo added seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.Â
Robert Richards led Buffalo state with 13 points and six rebounds, while Parkinson had 12 points.Â
Oneonta hits the road next to face Cortland on Fri. Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
