ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 18 nationally ranked SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team rekindled their feud and faced city rival Hartwick College Wednesday afternoon, the first time since November 13, 2005. Red Dragons freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored twice while freshman
Sam Rogers (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) and sophomore
Derek Marques (Somers, N.Y./Somers) scored their first collegiate goals in the 5-1 victory over the Hawks.
"That was a harder game than the score suggests, and this should develop into an entertaining rivalry over the next few years." said Head Coach
Iain Byrne.
Oneonta struck first in the 24th minute. Freshman
Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) gained possession of the ball at midfield and led a pass into the right side of the box for Mancias Magana who found the back of the net. The Red Dragons increased their lead a minute before halftime when senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) found Rogers down the field. Rogers muscled off a Hartwick defender and got a shot off the right side of the six-yard box to give Oneonta a two-goal lead.
Within the first 20 minutes of the second half, the Red Dragons tallied another two goals. Senior
Lucas Fecci (Somers, N.Y./Somers) received the ball in the 58th minute and started to work his way down the left side of the field. Fecci slotted a pass heading towards the goalie, but Marques used his speed to get to the ball first and score. Shortly after assisting Marques' goal, Fecci had the favor returned to him when senior
Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) centered it for him to hit in with a header.
The Hawks avoided the shutout when Jim Mahony scored off the assist of Rodrigo Fernandez in the 66th minute. Mancias Magana notched his second of the game when Zingaro found him in the 71st minute.
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) finished with two saves on the day, while Aden Razukiewicz tallied one and Gilstarp Jackson had two for Hartwick.
The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 14-10 and had an 8-7 advantage on corner kicks.
Oneonta returns to action Saturday for the beginning of SUNYAC play as they travel to face Buffalo State at 1 pm.
