The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team did not trail in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament as they went on to defeat Oswego State 14-12, Tuesday afternoon. Following the victory, Oneonta will travel and face the conference tournament host Cortland in the semifinals on Friday at 12:30 pm. Â

Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) and senior
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) gave the Red Dragons (8-8) a 3-0 lead five minutes into the game. Foiles broke the scoreless tie at 12:25, before the duo went back-to-back two minutes later. The Lakers (6-11) were able to close the gap to one before the quarter ended. Julia Quirk, Isabella Lembo, and Shae McConnell netted the goals for Oswego, while freshman
Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays/Hampton Bays) scored one off the pass from senior
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) for Oneonta. Â
Senior
Kelly McCloe (Endicott/Union-Endicott) brought the Red Dragons lead back to three with a pair of goals in the first couple minutes of the second. Quirk and Hughes traded goals later in the second and made it 7-4. Identical to the first, the Lakers used the final 10 minutes of the half to bring the deficit back to one, with goals from Quirk and McConnell.
Oswego won the draw control to start the third and tied the game with a goal from Logan Castiglione. After Castiglione's goal, Hughes and Foiles scored the next three goals to regain Oneonta's three-goal lead. Hughes netted one goal on a free position shot and the other off an assist from Foiles, and Foiles scored off an assist from Morris. Madison Davis attempted to halt the run with a goal at 11:02 for the Lakers but was not successful as sophomore
Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) and Foiles extended the Red Dragons lead to four, with 9:03 remaining in the third. Before the quarter ended, Quirk was assisted by Sela Wiley and Oswego entered the fourth down 12-9. Â
Hughes and Morris tried to put the game out of reach in the fourth as they each scored, however Quirk responded to both goals and kept the Lakers within three with 6:44 remaining. Davis cut the lead to two with 3:34 left, but Oswego could not get closer. Â
Just the Stats
Foiles and Hughes each finished with four goals and three assists. Morris and McCloe had a pair of goals, and sophomore
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) finished with 10 saves. Â
Quirk ended with six goals, while McConnell and Davis had two. Wiley had five assists and Sarah Kamide had 10 saves. Â
Oneonta had a 23-14 ground ball advantage and had two fewer turnovers, 17-19. Â
What's Next
Winner of the Red Dragon semifinals on Friday will face the winner of Geneseo/Brockport in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday at 1 pm.
