Oswego, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team resumed SUNYAC play yesterday with a convincing 9-0 shutout of Oswego.
The competition began with doubles play as the top flight team of junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and senior
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) were never in any real trouble on route to a convincing 8-2 win. The second pair of seniors
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) topped their foes from Oswego with a shutout 8-0. The same on the third doubles court as sophomores
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck)Â and
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis)Â were perfect in their 8-0 rout clinching a 3-0 lead after doubles stanza.
Winning ways continued for Oneonta and the rout was on. The Red Dragon women clean sweeped the Lakers victorious on all courts 1-6. Schutte moved up from her normal third spot and played number one singles today and turned in a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win. The number two singles player today was senior
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) who was tapped to fill in on that court. Wilson hiccuped early dropping the first two games and then won the next six-games and the set 6-2. Nerves settled down and she finished her opponent off in the second set 6-3 on route to her straight set win. The number three player today was senior
Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany) getting a start today and competed in one of the more dramatic matches on the day. Sampson dropped the first set in a tiebreaker and was down in the second set 3-0 and 4-1 and she took her game up one notch by saving a match point and fought back to win the set 7-5 and then 10-8 in the super tiebreaker. Sampson was exhausuted after the match but was proud of her comeback efforts. The fourth singles starter was senior captain
Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) and she did not disappoint and was very efficient in her double bagel effort win 6-0, 6-0. Senior
Brianna Harmon (Endicott/Union Endicott) dusted herself off and she also cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win in a dominant performance. Finally the sixth starter today was senior
Stephanie Menoutis (Warwick/Warwick Valley) who was looking to start after a long layoff and she too dropped the first two-games of the first set and then cruised back winning six of the next eight games in the first set triumphing 6-4 and followed that up by clinching the shutout win for Oneonta taking the second set 6-2.
So concludes a long afternoon of tennis for the Red Dragon women with a different look in singles today. Tomorrow, April 10th the The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team have little rest and get back on the road to Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania taking on the Wilkes University on the campus of Wilkes. The action gettting underway at 12 noon. The women look for their third win in a row.
