Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania - The perennial MAC Conference Champions The Wilkes University Colonals took a setback today as the SUNY Oneonta Women's Tennis Team doubled up their opponents gaining their 10th win on the year triumphing 6-3.
In doubles play senior
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) were absolutely dominant shutting out their Wilkes opponents 8-0. The number three pair of sophomores
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) were in command in their match as they doubled up their foes 8-4. That victory in the third position was pivotal going into the singles stanza putting the Red Dragon women up 2-1.
At the first singles position senior
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) started off slowly going down 2-0 but then won seven out of the next ten games taking the first set 7-5. Fraser's footwork and command of her shots went into another gear and she closed out the second set and the first singles match 6-2. At the second flight  Carswell was equally dominant throughout her contest winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. At this point the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team needed just one more match victory to clinch the dual competition. That clincher came from the sixth singles position as sophomore
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) was in total command from out of the gate with clean crisp shots on route to her 6-1, 6-1 win and the fifth and deciding point for Oneonta. Noteworthy was Schutte's match back on the third position as she was locked in a battle of long rallies. Schutte prevailed in the first set 6-2. Her Wilkes opponent turned the tables on Schutte and evened the match at one-set a piece when the Colonel player won the second set 6-2. A super tiebreaker was needed to decide the match and Schutte prevailed with an 10-8 win against a stubborn opponent as Schutte won the last point with an ace. Schutte won two doubles matches and two singles matches over a long weekend of tennis carrying a lot of the load for her team.
The Red Dragon's women's tennis team of Oneonta now welcome their SUNYAC rival SUNY Cortland on Tuesday, April 12 with the match getting underway at 3:00 PM. This will be the first of four conference matches that will be played during the upcoming week. By the end of the week the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team hope to clinch a playoff spot.
