A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team took SUNY New Paltz to the brink before falling short 17-16, Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons' win streak came to an end at five and the team moved to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Hawks improved to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference.
The Inside Story
Oneonta started with a 4-1 lead, forcing New Paltz to call a timeout halfway through the first. Senior
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) scored two of the goals during the early run, while sophomore
Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) and senior
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) netted the other two. Hughes and Morris tacked on one more in the first quarter, though the Hawks were able to close the gap to two.
Following Mancini's second goal of the game, that extended the Red Dragons lead back to three, the Hawks managed to tie the game at seven with 4:02 in the half. Camryn Ryder, Alyssa Indelicato, and Kaitlyn Shaw scored for New Paltz. The tie lasted momentarily as Hughes, Morris, and sophomore
Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) each scored to end the half with a 10-7 Oneonta lead.
New Paltz brought themselves back to within one after edging out Oneonta 6-4 in the third. During the third, Indelicato tallied three goals for the Hawks and junior
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) recorded three goals for the Red Dragons.
Morris won the opening fourth quarter draw control and scored to put Oneonta ahead 15-13. Maddie Gillis and Mancini traded free position goals, maintaining the two-goal difference with eight minutes to play. Indelicato brought the lead down to one with a man-up goal, two minutes later Shaw tied the game on a free position shot, and Kira Tucker gave New Paltz their first lead of the game with a man-up score with 3:04 remaining. Oneonta had a couple shots on goal in the end but could not beat the goalie.
Just the Stats
Morris led the Red Dragons with five goals and one assist, and Hughes finished with four goals and an assist. Foiles and Mancini each scored three goals, Foiles also had an assist, and sophomore
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) ended with 14 saves.

Oneonta is back in action Saturday as they host Geneseo at noon on Red Dragon Field.
