The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team (3-5, 1-1 SUNYAC) defeated Oswego (2-7, 1-1 SUNYAC) 18-14 Saturday afternoon. Junior
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) tallied six goals while seniors
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia),
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central), and sophomore
Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) netted four apiece.
The Inside Story
After the Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Red Dragons closed out the first quarter with a 5-1 run. Foiles kicked it off with an unassisted goal at 11:03, and a minute later Morris scored a free position goal. After sophomore
Marissa Evans (Jamesville/LaFayette) won the next draw control, Foiles dished it to Hughes to put the Red Dragons up 3-1. Sela Wiley scored for Oswego on a man-up opportunity before Foiles and Hughes ended the quarter with a pair of goals.
Wiley came out of the second quarter firing for Oswego, as she scored three goals, and tied the game at five with 10:31 left in the half. Wiley's run did not faze Oneonta as they scored five unanswered to end the half. Mancini began the run at 9:18 with a goal assisted by Foiles. Morris hit the net on a free position shot, Hughes tacked one off an assist from Evans, and Foiles picked up her third and fourth goals of the game during the run, ending the half with a 10-5 advantage.
The Lakers outscored the Red Dragons 5-2 in the third, narrowing the gap 12-10. Shae McConnell scored three of the goals for Oswego, with the other two coming from Wiley and Madison Davis. Morris and Foiles scored the two goals for Oneonta.
Morris and Foiles started the fourth with back-to-back goals, bringing the Red Dragons lead to four with 12:13 remaining. Oswego scored three goals with three different attackers within the next five minutes of play, however Mancini maintained the lead for Oneonta with three goals of her own during the stretch. Hughes gave a little extra breathing room with a man-up goal assisted by Foiles, to put the Red Dragons up five with 3:45 left. The Lakers tacked on one more with a goal from McConnell, before the final horn.
Just the Stats
Foiles, Morris, Mancini, and Hughes scored all 18 goals for the Red Dragons. Foiles had four assists, while Mancini and Evans had one. Sophomore
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) had a season-high 15 saves.
Wiley had seven goals and McConnell had five for the Lakers. Sarah Kamide was in net for Oswego and finished with 11 saves.
Oneonta had a 21-20 advantage on groundballs and was 19-23 on clears, while Oswego was 10-17.
What's Next
The Red Dragons are back in action Wednesday as they will host Potsdam at 4 pm.
