Binghamton, NY - For the second day in a row the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team held their opponents to a shutout and this time it was the Brockport Golden Eagles bowing to the Red Dragons 9-0.
The doubles play was close on the first tier court as senior
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) went down 5-2 and fought back to gain the tiebreaker and closed out the win with an 8-7 score (7-3). The next two pairs of doubles team were almost perfect in putting away the Eagles; Seniors
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) took charge early and didn't look back on route to the 8-0 triumph. The third tandem of sophomores
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) were in total control out of the gate and came away with an 8-1 win. A 3-0 lead going into singles gave the Eagles little chance to come back.
Fraser at number one singles was locked in a slug fest and she was forced to play defensively throughout, but her consistency was too much for her free-swinging opponent and patience won as Oneonta took that court 6-2, 6-3. In perhaps the match of the day Schutte had to be pushed up to number two-singles when Carswell suffered an injury in doubles. Schutte battled the whole match and lost the first set 7-5. She refused to go quietly and in the second set, the match was back and forth and went to a tiebreaker. Amazingly Schutte saved three-match points and ultimately took the second set 7-6. That forced a tiebreaker and Schutte was pretty much in command and stormed to a 10-6 super tiebreaker victory in a match that took 2 1/2 hours to finally complete. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth Red Dragon singles players all went on to straight set wins. Macdonald never in any trouble cruised to 6-2, 6-1 victory. Karen in the fourth position was perfect on route to her 6-0, 6-0 double bagel triumph. Fifth singles was in the hands of sophomore Jullia Holtermann and after losing the first game she won the next 12 easily taking home an all-important win for the Oneonta women. Senior
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) got the call to fill in today at sixth flight and was perfect adding another 6-0, 6-0 victory for Red Dragon Tennis and secured the shutout for Oneonta for the second day in a row.
Conference foe SUNY Geneseo is up next for the SUNY Oneonta Women. The Red Dragons look for their seventh win in a row and a sweep of SUNYAC pool play at the Binghamton Tennis Center. First ball struck will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 16th.
