Women’s Lacrosse picks up road win at Plattsburgh

Red Dragons also shutout Fredonia over the weekend

A Quick Look
Despite the unruly northern weather, the SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team defeated Plattsburgh 19-11 Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won their past four and improved to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The Inside Story
Oneonta 19, Plattsburgh 11

Junior Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) and senior Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) scored a pair of goals within 40 seconds of one another to give the Red Dragons an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead in half on a free position shot with 6:53 in the first, before the Red Dragons closed out the quarter on a 4-1 run. Sophomore Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) began the run with an unassisted goal, senior Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) tallied one on a free position shot, and Foiles scored one before assisting freshman Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook/Lynbrook). Plattsburgh ended the quarter with a last second goal from Lindsay Guzzetta, though they still trailed 6-2.

Both teams traded a pair of goals early in the second, then a weather delay put the game on pause. Foiles and Mancini scored for the Red Dragons, while Jordan Kowalski and Kate Kennedy scored for the Cardinals. Guzzetta was the first to score following the 35 minute delay, bringing Plattsburgh within three. That was the closest they got as Oneonta put up seven of the last eight goals in the half. Freshman Miranda Murray (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Hughes tallied two goals during the stretch, while Foiles, Morris, and Mancini netted one, putting the Red Dragons up 15-6 at halftime.

Mancini scored her fourth of the game to put Oneonta up 10, forcing a running clock with 13:24 left in the third. Halfway through the third, Morris tacked on one more on a man-up free position shot. Plattsburgh closed the third scoring two free position shots from the crosse of Emily Caoili.

Caoili scored the first goal of the fourth to bring the Cardinals within eight with 11 minutes left, but Foiles and Morris shortly got the Red Dragons back up to 10, allowing them to run out most of the remaining time. Plattsburgh did score a couple with three minutes remaining, but it was not enough.

Just the Stats
Foiles led the team with eight points off five goals and three assists. Mancini finished with four goals and an assist, while Morris tickled the twine four times and had six draw controls. Hughes ended the day with a hat trick and an assist, Murray had a pair of goals and four draw controls, and sophomore Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) had the game-high four caused turnovers.

Caoili ended with five goals and an assist for the Cardinals, and Guzzetta finished with a pair of goals and and five draw controls.

Sophomore Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) recorded nine saves, and freshman Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush/Columbia) came in and earned a save.
