The Inside Story
The Hawks jumped to a 4-1 lead less than six minutes into the first, senior
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) scored her tenth goal of the season during the Hawks' stretch. Sophomore
Marissa Evans (Jamesville/LaFayette) netted her third goal of the season to make it 4-2 with 7:02 in the first, though Hartwick got one back with 30 seconds left in the quarter, on a free position goal from Katrina Marten.
The Hawks were able to get the lead to four on another free position shot. That was the only goal they scored in the second, as the Red Dragons closed out the half with three goals, cutting the deficit to one. Hughes recorded her second goal of the game off the pass from freshman
Ellie Downey (West Babylon/West Babylon), and Foiles scored the other two, one off a free position shot.
Oneonta opened the second half with another three unanswered goals. Senior
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) tied the game with a man-up free position shot, sophomore
Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) gave the Red Dragons the lead, and Hughes, who assisted Byrne, recorded her hat trick for an 8-6 lead with 6:52 left in the third. Hartwick was able to tie the game with a pair of goals, from Emily Schaub and Emily Madigan, before Oneonta scored four in the remaining two minutes of the third. Sophomore
Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) assisted Evans for her second goal of the game, Foiles recorded her third of the contest and assisted Morris on two goals during the run.
Morris started the fourth gaining draw control and assisted Foiles on a goal, extending the Red Dragon lead 13-8. The Hawks did not go away and scored three free position shots, narrowing the gap to two. Kristen Vaccarelli, Madigan and Schaub netted the three goals, Schaub scored the last one with 4:58 remaining. Mancini did not allow Hartwick to come closer as she scored her fifth goal of the season, and Foiles scored the last goal with less than 10 seconds left.
Just the Stats
Morris and Hughes recorded a hat trick and had an assist. Evans had two goals, while Mancini and Byrne scored once. Sophomore
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) started in net and had seven saves, and Samantha Miller got the start for the Hawks and made eight saves. The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 35-22 and had a 22-19 advantage on ground balls.
