A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell to Rochester 15-13 in their home opener Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Red Dragons to 1-4 on the season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 2-3. Â
The Inside Story
After senior
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) scored the first goal on a free position shot, Rochester scored the next five goals. Two of the goals came from man-up free position attempts, and Yellowjackets' Brooke Fiannaca led the push with two goals. The run was stopped with 5:46 left in the first with another goal from Hughes. The Red Dragons scored two more goals and closed the deficit to one before the end of the first. Sophomore
Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) scored on an assist from Hughes, and Hughes recorded her hat trick with four seconds left in the quarter. Â
Rochester created a 6-4 lead off a free position shot by Gracie Giannettino, before Oneonta tied the game with 7:41 left in half. Following a Red Dragon caused turnover, Hughes received the ball and made one defender miss to score, and junior
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) netted her 10th goal of the season, tying the game. Both teams closed out the half with a goal, entering halftime tied at seven. Senior
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) scored off the assist from Foiles for the Red Dragons, and Zoe Sullivan scored for the Yellowjackets. Â
After Giannettino scored a man-up goal to start the third, sophomores
Lauren Mancini (Miller Place/Miller Place) and
Marissa Evans (Jamesville/LaFayette) took advantage on free position shots, and gave Oneonta a 9-8 lead with 7:20 left in the third. Rochester closed out the third with four unanswered goals, all four scored by different players. Â
The Red Dragons narrowed the gap to one with two goals from senior
Isabella Marx (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East), on a free position shot, and Hughes, her fifth of the contest. The Yellowjackets stretched the lead to four with three straight goals with 7:28 remaining. Oneonta scored a couple goals with under two minutes remaining from Marx and Hughes.

Hughes finished the game with a career-high six goals, and an assist. Marx had a pair of goals, while Foiles and Evans ended with a goal and assist. Sophomore
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) collected 13 saves. Â

The Red Dragons return to action Wednesday as they host crosstown rival Hartwick at 3 pm.Â
