SUNYAC Men’s Soccer Tournament Semifinal Preview: No. 2 Oneonta vs. No. 6 Plattsburgh State

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team is set to host Plattsburgh State in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Semifinal match tomorrow, November 2, at 1 pm at Red Dragon Field.

Ticket Information: General admission tickets are $5 and tickets for children ages 5-12 are $3. Children ages four and under and students from SUNYAC schools with a valid ID will be admitted free of charge.

Last Matchup: These teams last met in Plattsburgh on October 12 and the Red Dragons came out with a 1-0 victory after a 60th minute goal by freshman Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck).

Season Recap: Oneonta (12-2-2, 6-2-1) opened the season with an eight-game unbeaten streak and ended the month of September with a 7-0-1 record, with victories over St. Lawrence and Hobart in the Mayor's Cup and a couple conference wins against Buffalo State and New Paltz. The Red Dragons entered October ranked 14th in the United Soccer Coaches National Rankings, however, went winless in their next three matches and dropped to 7-2-2 overall.

Looking to get things back on track, Oneonta closed out the season with a five-game win streak that began with their 1-0 win versus Plattsburgh State. During that stretch, the Red Dragons hosted then 15th-nationally ranked Cortland and defeated them 3-0 behind senior Lucas Fecci's (Somers, N.Y./Somers) hat trick, and Mancias Magana scored a pair in a 3-2 victory over Fredonia and clinched Oneonta the two seed in the SUNYAC tournament. The Red Dragons closed out the season with a 2-1 victory over Hamilton, and found themselves ranked second in Region III, only behind Cortland.

Just the Stats: The offense can rely on several players to score and create chances, but the one-two punch is Fecci and Mancias Magana. Fecci led the team and SUNYAC with 10 goals, and added four assists for 24 points, the third most points in the conference. Mancias Magana finished the year leading the team with seven assists, which was also tied for the third most in conference, and tallied eight goals for 23 points, the fourth most points in the conference.

When the offense doesn't go through the duo, seniors Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), and freshman Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) generate the opportunities. Brunell recorded five goals and four assists for 14 points, Holder finished with four goals and a pair of assists for 10 points, and Zingaro found the net twice and had four assists for eight points.

Defensively, the Red Dragons have their backline built around graduate senior Tristan Battistoni (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington), senior Malcolm Swett (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), and juniors John Bernardi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Dalton Dancy (Syosset, N.Y./Saint Anthony's). The defensive wall has held opponents under five shot on goal attempts in 10 different matches. Centered around the defense and manning the net is senior Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Hanna started all 16 games, allowed 15 goals and saved 50 shots for a .769 save percentage, the second-best in the conference. The defensive group has also helped on the offensive side. This season, Swett recorded a goal and an assist, Bernardi and Hanna each tallied two assists, and Battistoni posted an assist.

About Plattsburgh: Plattsburgh State finished their 2022 regular season 8-7-3 overall and 2-4-3 in the conference to earn the six seed in the conference tournament. In the first round of the tournament, the Cardinals gained a 3-0 lead in the first half and won 3-2 over the three-seeded New Paltz. Plattsburgh's offense is led by Brian Coughlan, who scored a goal and an assist in the first-round match, leads the SUNYAC in assists (10) and points (26). When Coughlan is not producing, the Cardinals rely on John Hayes and Juan Velez. Hayes tallied five goals and a pair of assists while Velez recorded four goals and an assist this season. Teddy Healy is the primary goaltender for Plattsburgh. He played in 16 games this season, allowed 23 goals and saved 58 shots for a .716 save percentage.

What's on the Line: The winner of this match will face the winner of Cortland and Brockport in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday.
