Wrestling finishes 7th at New York Collegiate championships

Four Red Dragons earn All-State honors

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed today in the 2021 New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by SUNY Cortland.  The Red Dragons collected 48.5 points overall and finished seventh in the team standings.  RIT was the overall team champion.

The Inside Story
Four Red Dragons earned All-State honors for their performances in their respective weight classes.  The four are graduate student Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City), fifth-year seniors Anthony Romero (Spring Valley/Ramapo) and Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) and senior Tyler Skala (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach).

Romero was the top place-finisher for Oneonta taking fourth at 133 pounds.  Romero was seeded No. 2 in his bracket and won his first two matches by decision to advance into the semifinals.  In the semifinals, he lost 10-3 to Luis Hernandez of Ithaca.  In the consolation semifinals, Romero took a 9-2 decision against Elijah Moshenek of Alfred State.  In the third place match, Romero was pinned Zach Levey of Brockport.

Skala was the No. 3 seed at 125 pounds and started his day with a 10-2 major decision loss to Jeff Robinson of RIT, which dropped him into the consolation side of the bracket.  Skala recorded a pin over Matt Haycook of Ithaca in his first match in the consolations.  The remainder of his matches were all medical forfeits allowing him to finish 6th overall.

Brazinski was the top seed in the 165 pound bracket and won his first two matches to advance into the semifinals.  His second win came via pinfall which was his 100th collegiate victory making him the ninth Oneonta wrestler to reach the milestone.

In the semifinals, Brazinski fell 6-2 to Austin Lamb of RIT.  Brazinski lost his next match before defeating Michael Emerick of Merchant Marine 5-1 to claim fifth place.

Pine was the No. 2 seed in the 285 pound weight class and ran off three victories to find himself in the semifinals.  Pine was defeated by Calik Kennedy of RIT 11-2 to fall into the consolation side of the bracket.  Pine was pinned in his next match, which put him in the 5/6 match where he was awarded fifth place due to his opponent retiring due to an injury.
