Red Dragons Sweep Four Matches at Manganaro Duals, Ryan Records 100th Career Win

COLLEGEVILLE, N.Y. -- The Oneonta wrestling team traveled to Ursinus College for the Manganaro Duals on Saturday and finished 4-0 with victories over National Wrestling Cocahes Association's (NWCA) No. 8 nationally ranked Johnson & Wales University, No. 13 nationally ranked Arcadia University, Trinity College (Conn.), and Roger Williams University. The Red Dragons defeated the No. 8 Wildcats, 25-24, the No. 13 Knights 41-10, the Bantams, 31-8, and the Hawks, 25-14, to improve to 7-0 in duals this season.

Seniors Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central), Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/), and junior Trevor Cortwright (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) all went 4-0 on the day. Leonard's four victories included two tech falls and a major, while Ryan recorded three first-round falls and a major, and Cortwright had a major with three decisions.

In their final dual, against Arcadia, Ryan recorded his 100th career win. He became the 10th wrestler in program history to win 100 career matches as a Red Dragon and is currently ranked fourth in program history with 47 pins.

Senior Aydin DeForest (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) won three matches throughout the day with two first-round falls and a major decision. Senior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) also recorded three victories that included two first-round pins, and two wins against Region 1 ranked opponents. Sophomore Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) won two matches including a tech fall and a win over a Region 1 ranked opponent, while junior Billy Colloca (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon Senior High) had two wins including a tech fall.

Oneonta 31, Trinity 8
Oneonta started the day with their 31-8 victory over Trinity, where they won eight of the 10 matches with two pins and a major decision. Six of the victories were against regionally ranked wrestlers.

Cortwright won a 7-2 decision over Matt Carrozza, the sixth ranked 133-pounder in Region 1. Cortwright took Carrozza down 20 seconds into the bout, then he recorded another takedown with 11 seconds remaining.

In the 141-lb. match, Leonard beat Ty Trickle, who is ranked fourth in Region 1 at 149 lbs., in an 18-5 major with five takedowns. Leonard is currently ranked 14th nationally at 141 by NWCA and third in Region 2.

Sophomore Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) battled through adversity and defeated Drew Pratt, the eighth ranked 157-pounder in Region 1, in a 6-4 decision at 149 pounds. Maby was down 3-1 to Pratt entering the third round until he scored an escape 15 seconds into the period, then a takedown with six seconds remaining. He was also awarded the riding time bonus.

Senior Mason Rappold (/) bested Jacob Kennedy in an 8-3 decision at 157 pounds. The match was scoreless entering the final period until Rappold escaped Kennedy to start the third. The Bantam shortly took down the Red Dragon with 1:46 left, however with 34 seconds remaining, Rappold reversed Kennedy and scored a four-point nearfall in the closing moments for the 8-3 final.

Monica, the Region 2 fifth ranked 165-pounder, defeated Maverick Heimbuck, who is ranked eighth in Region 1 at 165, in a 9-6 decision. Monica had a takedown in the first and second period for the early lead, then he had a pair of escapes in the final minute of the contest.

Ryan and senior Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) both recorded a first-round fall against their opponents at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Ryan, who is nationally ranked fifth at 184 and first in Region 2, pinned Tucker Vician in 1:01. LiCastri, the second ranked 197-pounder in Region 2, had a 39-second fall against Luke Hutton.

Jackson, who is ranked sixth in Region 2 at 285 pounds, defeated Emre Sensoy, the fifth ranked 285-pounder in Region 1, in an 8-1 decision. Jackson scored a takedown in the second and third periods against Sensoy then he gained the riding time bonus.

Oneonta 25, Roger Williams 14
In a back-and-forth battle, Oneonta recorded a fall, a tech fall, and two majors as they won six of the 10 matches in their dual against Roger Williams.

Colloca defeated Spencer Buscema at 125 lbs. in a 15-0 tech fall in 2:02 after he took Buscema down 15 seconds into the match then totaled 12 nearfall points. At 133, Cortwright had a crucial takedown with 1:14 remaining to secure a 4-1 decision over Matteo Eagleson, then Leonard scored a pair of takedowns in the first period en route to beating Shaun McLaughlin in a 7-3 decision at 141.

Roger Williams won the next three matches to tie the dual at 11 entering the 174-bout, however Oneonta regained the momentum and won three of the final four matches. DeForest led it off with a 13-4 major over Tyrell Newmann, who is ranked eighth in Region 1. The 174-pound Red Dragon scored a takedown in each period while totaling three escapes and riding time.

In the 184 lb. match, Ryan faced the eighth ranked 184-pounder in Region 1, Josh Nieroda, and overpowered him in an 11-0 major. He gained an early 7-0 lead after the first period with a takedown 30 seconds into the contest then a four-point nearfall shortly after.

Jackson capped off the Red Dragons victory with a 2:14 fall against Jayden Toppan, who is the sixth-ranked 285-pounder in Region 1.

Oneonta 25, No. 8 Johnson & Wales (JWU) 24
After their dual with Roger Williams, Oneonta split their matches against JWU and won their five matches with two pins, a tech fall, and two major decisions.

Junior Tristan Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Cortwright both started the dual off with a major decision at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively. Hinchcliff defeated Cameron Gibson in a 14-0 major with a takedown in each period and a four-point nearfall in the first. Cortwright had the advantage on Jahir Aguilar for a 14-1 major with a takedown in the first period, then another one in the second with six nearfall points.

Leonard extended the Red Dragons dual lead to 13-0 with an 18-1 tech fall in 2:11 over Nicholas Torres. He scored two takedowns in the first minute against Torres, while he totaled 12 nearfall points.

JWU won the next three matches to make it 13-12 in the bout, then DeForest and Ryan clinched the match for Oneonta with a pair of first-round pins at 174 and 184. DeForest pinned Ryan Olihovik in 54 seconds, while Ryan recorded a 1:16 fall against Logan Reiner to put the team ahead 25-12.

Oneonta 41, No. 13 Arcadia 10
In their final dual of the day, Oneonta won eight of the 10 matches against Arcadia with three falls, two techs, and a major.

After Colloca won the 125-lb. match by forfeit, Cortwright registered a takedown in the second and third period against Aamire Gaskins for a 6-0 decision at 133.

Leonard gave Oneonta a 14-0 lead in the dual with his 15th tech fall of the season. He recorded a couple takedowns and 11 nearfall points for a 17-1 tech in 2:12 against Lucas Tirpak.

Freshman Kingston Strouse (Northport, N.Y./Northport) beat Nick DellaRocca in a 13-4 major at 157 pounds. Strouse started his match strong with a takedown and eight nearfall points in the first period.

Monica defeated Riley Gutierrez at 165 in an 18-0 tech fall in 3:22 with a pair of takedowns and 12 nearfall points.

DeForest, Ryan, and Jackson all finished the dual strong with a first-period fall. DeForest pinned Chris Cratsley in 1:05. Ryan had a 1:12 fall against Jagger Gray for his 100th career win, and Jackson scored a 2:11 fall over Tyler Mains.

Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, January 24, for the SUNYAC Championships at SUNY Brockport starting at 10 am.
