Men's Track and Field

School records fall at outdoor opener for track & field

The SUNY Oneonta track & field teams began the outdoor portion of its 2012-13 schedule this past Saturday by tearing up the Lynchburg facility at the DIII Commonwealth Duals.  The men ended up going 4-0 for the day while the women were 3-1.  In addition to host Lynchburg, Mary Washington, Bridgewater (Va) and Eastern Mennonite were the competing squads.

Men's recap
The men, who were ranked by the USTFCCCA No. 16 in the first national poll of the outdoor season, picked up where they left off a few weeks ago when they won the SUNYAC title.  Senior Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) continued his dominance in the sprints while sophomores J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) broke school records in the throws.

Bernstein won both the 100m and 200m dashes with times of 10.65 and 21.35 respectively.  His time in the 100m was a meet record and currently the second fastest time in Div. III.  His 200 time is currently the fastest time in Div. III in the early season.

Freshman Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) wasn't far behind Bernstein, as he placed third in the 100m and was second in the 200m events.  Carr ran a time of 10.99 in the 100m and ran 22.06 in the 200m.

Roth set a pair of school records on Saturday including shattering the hammer throw record, held by Weinert, by 11 feet.  Roth won the hammer throw with a distance of 52.79m (173' 2”), which was a meet record along with being 14th on the Div. III performance list for the event.  His second school record came in the shot put, where he finished second with a heave of 14.83m (48' 8”).

Weinert set his school record in the discus throw where he placed third with a distance of 42.39m (140' 10”).  His throw went one foot past the old record set last spring.  Weinert was also second in the javelin (162'), third in the hammer (154' 8”) and fifth in the shot put (43' 10 ¾”).

Other event winners for the men in the meet included, sophomore Mike Didas (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) (5000m) and senior Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park) (3000m steeplechase).  Didas clocked a time of 15:40.62 while Harvey ran a meet record 9:41.46.  Oneonta went 1-2 in both the 5000m and steeplechase with freshman Jim Bernstein (Grahamsville/Tri-Valley-Grahamsville) taking second in the 5000m (15:43.70) and sophomore Charles Remillard (Peru/Peru) coming in second in the steeplechase (9:46.23).

Women's recap
Leading the women this weekend was junior Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip), who won two individual events while running the second leg on the winning 4x100m relay.  Brandt ran meet record times in winning both the 100m (12.47) and 200m (25.98) dashes, which were also personal best marks for her.  The 400m relay also set a meet record time of 49.73, as Brandt teamed with senior Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and classmates Brittany Cocchieri (Airmont/Suffern) and Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls).

Ventresca was also fourth in both the dashes while Cocchieri was third in the 200m (26.57) and second in the 400m (1:00.61).

Other event winners for the women on Saturday were seniors Kate Parsons (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) and Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and juniors Danielle Kennedy (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) and Allison Ryley (LaGrangeville/Arlington).

Parsons set a meet record of 147' 7” in winning the hammer throw.  The throw was also a personal best mark in the event.

Nasr won the 800m with a time of 2:23.22, which was a meet record for that event.

Kennedy broke her own school record by seven seconds and set a meet and facility record time of 17:35.12 in winning the 5000m.

Ryley set a meet record in winning the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 11:43.11.

Both squads will be back in action again this Saturday when they travel to compete in the SUNY Cortland Invitational.
