Men's soccer complete weekend sweep in Rochester area

Box Score After conceding a goal in the second minute of the match today, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team took control for the final 88 minutes en route to a 4-1 victory at SUNY Geneseo.  With its win yesterday at Brockport, the Red Dragons completed its weekend sweep to the Rochester area and are now 6-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC.  Oneonta has now won six of its last seven contests.

"We are starting to look and play like a team," said coach Iain Byrne via text.  "We are controlling games and scoring goals.  We still have a ways to go to get to last year's level, but this was an encouraging weekend to build off."

Chris Kanaval got things started for Geneseo (3-5-2/1-2-1 SUNYAC) with an assist from Alex Stephan just 1:04 into the match.

Six minutes later, Oneonta got the equalizer from junior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) unassisted.

Oneonta took the lead for good in the 26th minute when freshman Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) volleyed a ball from 25 yards out that beat the Geneseo keeper.

Senior Alex Shkreli (Bedford/Fox Lane) added a third goal before halftime when he finished off a great move after receiving a pass from freshman Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's).

Volpe capped the scoring for the Red Dragons with an unassisted goal in the 79th minute on a great individual move that saw him dribble past two defenders and the goalie before putting the ball in the back of the goal.

Oneonta finished ahead in shots, 16-5, while holding a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta will hit the road again next weekend when they travel to the North Country to face Plattsburgh and SUNY Potsdam.
