Box Score SUNY Cortland junior John Recordon ended the game in the 96th minute of play today as the rival Red Dragons left town with a 2-1 victory over SUNY Oneonta in SUNYAC men's soccer action. The loss for defending SUNYAC champion Oneonta dropped them to 1-1 in the conference while Cortland moves to 2-0 in the SUNYAC.
Recordon's shot came from about 25 yards out and landed in the upper right hand corner of the goal over the head of an outstretch
Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS). The goal was Recordon's first of the season.
Recordon's goal came just minutes after Oneonta (4-3-1) nearly ended the game on a great crossing pass into the box by sophomore
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) that senior
Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) got his chest on right in front of the goal. Unfortunately, the redirect landed in the body of Cortland (4-4) keeper Tim Beauvais.
Fortier scored his third goal of the season in the 32nd minute to tie the game at one goal apiece. Fortier's goal came on a direct kick after a foul was called on Cortland outside the box.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of the game when junior Bryan Merlos scored his first goal of the season off an assist from classmate Joe Buffolino. Buffolino crossed a ball into the box, which Merlos was able to head to the back of the goal.
The final shots were 10 for each side and the final tally for corner kicks were eight for Oneonta and four for Cortland. Both goalkeepers made three saves in the game.
Oneonta will now hit the road for its next six games beginning this Friday when they play at Brockport. Friday's rematch of the 2011 SUNYAC championship game will begin at 4pm.
