Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored seven times and added three assists, but Oneonta State lost a heartbreaker today to Brockport in a battle for one of the final SUNYAC playoff spots. The 15-14 loss to the Golden Eagles eliminated the Red Dragons from the playoff race while Brockport claims the fourth and final spot for the upcoming conference tournament that begins next Friday at Cortland.
Oneonta (11-4/4-4 SUNYAC) scored two goals in the span of 1:01 including the game-tying goal with 13 seconds remaining, but Brockport (10-4/5-3 SUNYAC) scored with two seconds to steal the victory.
Oneonta trailed 14-12 with less than two minutes remaining in the game when Monteith scored a goal to get the Red Dragons to 14-13 with 1:14 left. Monteith then assisted on the game-tying goal as she threaded a pass to freshman
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) in front of the goal. McNally incredibly got a shot off as she was falling down and put the ball behind Brockport goalie Hannah O'Connor.
The game-tying play was set up when
Cynthia Prag (Smithtown/Smithtown West) intercepted a pass from Brockport as they were attempting to clear the ball, which would have run the clock out. Prag then got the ball to Monteith, who found McNally.
The hero for Brockport ended up being Kaila Maguire, who took the ensuing draw control to goal where she beat Oneonta goalie
Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) with the game-winning goal.
Oneonta never was ahead in today's game and actually trailed by as many as five goals early in the second half. The Red Dragons just kept battling and an unassisted goal by McNally 11:28 into the second half brought Oneonta to within a pair of goals at 12-10.
Maguire pushed Brockport's lead back to three goals before freshman
Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) scored with an assist from Monteith to make the score 13-11 with under 12 minutes to go in the game.
Monteith notched another goal with just under four minutes to go on a free position shot to bring Oneonta one goal closer before Maguire scored what looked like an insurance goal with 1:57 remaining.
Monteith's output of seven goals and three assists was the second time in the last three games that she recorded 10 points. She now has 71 goals and 27 assists for 98 points, which shatters the 25-year old single season record of 90 points. Her 71 goals breaks the single season record which Monteith set as a freshman with 70 goals.
Maguire's four goals led the Golden Eagles while Dayna Piraino chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists. Emily Zartman contributed three goals and one assist.
Senior
Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip), who is having a monster season on the draw, recorded 11 of the 21 draw controls for Oneonta today. She also added two goals and two assists.
Oneonta will end the 2012 season this Tuesday evening when they travel across the street to face city rival Hartwick beginning at 7pm.
