Sophomore Rebecca Monteith scores four goals to lead Oneonta

Box Score

Oneonta State University held off a late rally to defeat The University of Scranton, 16-11, in overtime Tuesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Sophomore attacker Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) led the Red Dragons, now 4-0, with six goals and two assists and junior midfielder Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) and freshman attacker Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) finished with four goals and an assist apiece.
Scranton, which dropped to 1-2, was led by sophomore attacker Kaela Mahon (AvonbytheSea, N.J./Saint Rose) with three goals and junior attacker Caroline Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame) and first-year players Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) combined for six goals and seven assists.
In the closing minute with Oneonta hanging on to an 11-10 lead and trying to run out the clock, Royal junior midfielder Kristin Pickell (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), who finished with two goals, forced a turnover. Then, after the Red Dragons were called for an infraction, Giorno took a pass from Pryor at midfield and found herself in a one-on-one situation with Red Dragon goalie Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague). She fired a shot past Muscietta to tie it up with 12 seconds remaining.
The Red Dragons dominated the overtime period, taking the lead for good on an unassisted goal by
Tulley 27 seconds into the overtime period. After Montieth followed with a goal off of a free position, the Royals were called for a 3-minute penalty, which Oneonta converted into three straight man-up goals by Fazio, sophomore midfielder Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip), and Tulley to set the final score.
The Royals trailed throughout the game, but Pickell tallied back-to-back goals during a four-minute
span and Giorno followed with an unassisted goal as Scranton erased a 9-7 deficit to take a shortlived
10-9 lead with less than four minutes remaining.
Oneonta kept its composure and responded with back-to-back unassisted goals by Monteith and
Fazio to take an 11-10 lead into the final minute of play.
Muscietta finished with a game-high 11 saves, including one off of a free position late in the second
half, and Scranton first-year goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood), making her first start, stopped eight shots.
The Red Dragons held a 34-28 advantage in shot and converted four of six free-position opportunities for goals, while the Royals held a slight edge in draw controls, 16-14, and ground balls, 27-23.
Junior defender Katie Slade (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East), DePaolera, and Pickell combined for 11 of Scranton's 21 caused turnovers.
