SUNY Oneonta sophomore
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored four goals today, but the Red Dragons fell to No. 4 Hamilton College 21-12 in its home opener of 2010. The loss for Oneonta was its first of the season as they are now 4-1 overall while the Continentals win in its season opener.
After Hamilton scored just 48 seconds into the contest, Oneonta ran off three unanswered goals during a five minute stretch to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore
Brittany Passarelli (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) got things started for the Red Dragons with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute. She was followed by Monteith in the ninth minute and freshman
Molly McGroary (New City/Clarkstown South) in the tenth minute, both coming unassisted. McGroary finished the game with three goals on the day.
The Continentals came right back with four straight goals of its own including a goal and an assist by senior Liz Rave (Huntington/Huntington) to give Hamilton the lead back at 5-3. Three of the goals came within 45 seconds of each other during the 11th minute. Rave finished the game with three goals and an assist.
Oneonta scored four of the next five goals including a pair by Monteith as they regained the lead at 7-6 in the 21st minute.
The visitors then seized control of the game scoring eleven unanswered goals to take a commanding 17-7 lead with just over 20 minutes to go in the contest. Three of the goals during the stretch came as Oneonta was a player down because of a yellow card right at the beginning of the second half.
Freshman Rachel Friedman (Fairfield, CT) led Hamilton with four goals in the game.
Oneonta will travel to Vassar College for its next game this coming Friday, Mar. 19 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
