SUNY Oneonta Pulls Out Overtime Win Against Castleton

Freshman Eric Fortier scores game-winner in first overtime

Box Score      SUNY Oneonta freshman Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) redirected a cross into the box in the 97th minute of play to lift the Red Dragons to a 2-1 victory against visiting Castleton State today in non-conference men's soccer action. The pass was sent in by sophomore Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) from the right flank after Jedynak moved past a defender. Fortier finished the play by putting the ball into the upper right corner of the goal and, in the process, kept Oneonta perfect in the early season.
Sophomore Michael Diefenbacher (Marcy/Whitesboro) scored a late second half goal to break a scoreless tie. Diefenbacher
took a pass into the box from classmate Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) and moved in for a shot at close range that ended up deflecting off the goalie's fingertips and the post before settling into the back of the goal.
Castleton (1-2) tied the game less than four minutes later when Oneonta (3-0) failed to clear the ball out of its defensive third. Sophomore Jacob Ferry (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) collected the loose ball and fired a shot past an outstretched Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills).
Thirty seconds prior to Diefenbacher's goal, Korn came up with a diving stop of a shot by sophomore Josh Costa (Sutton, MA/Sutton) that kept the game deadlocked at 0-0. Korn finished the game with four saves as he moved to 3-0 for the season.
Oneonta finished the contest with a 14-7 advantage in shots including a shot early in the game by Jedynak that hit the post.
Castleton goalie Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) came up with eight saves in the game for the Spartans.
Oneonta will be in action again this coming Friday afternoon when they open play in the 2009 men's Div. III Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Red Dragons will play William Paterson on Red Dragon Field at 1:00 p.m.
