SUNY Oneonta Remains Perfect with 2-1 Win Against William Paterson

Sophomore Evan Jedynak nets a pair in win against Pioneers

Box Score      SUNY Oneonta sophomore Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) scored two first half goals to lead the Red Dragons to a 2-1 win against visiting William Paterson today in the opening game of the 2009 Div. III Men's Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by Oneonta. The win for the Red Dragons, who were ranked 10th in this week's NSCAA East Region Poll, keeps them perfect at 4-0 while the loss for the Pioneers puts them at 3-1-1 overall.
All of the game's scoring came in the opening half of play today. The shots at the end of the contest were even at eight apiece. Both goalkeepers made three saves each.
Jedynak's first goal came at the 24-minute mark when he collected a rebound off the Pioneer goalkeeper after he made a save of an Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington). Jedynak was able to collect the loose ball and put it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Nearly nine minutes later, Jedynak once again found a loose ball inside the box and shot it over the keeper's legs into the lower left corner of the goal for a two-goal cushion.
William Paterson cut Oneonta's lead to one goal in the 40th minute on a goal by junior Steve DeMatteo (Piscataway, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen). DeMatteo came away from a scramble in the box to put the ball over the line.
Oneonta will now play in the championship game scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff tomorrow on Red Dragon Field.
