Box Score Playing with only 10 players for nearly 73 minutes, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team earned a hard fought point today battling Plattsburgh to a scoreless tie in SUNYAC men's action. The Red Dragons
are now 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play while Plattsburgh moves to 8-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the SUNYAC.
The story of this match was the stellar play in goal by Oneonta keeper, senior
Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills), who made half-a-dozen big stops to keep the Red Dragons in the contest. Korn, who finished the game with a season high eight saves, came up with more than a few diving stops. His biggest save of the game came right at the end of the first overtime period when he stymied Plattsburgh's Pat Shaughnessy (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) as time was about to expire.
Oneonta lost sophomore
Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) in the 38th minute of the match to a red card and Plattsburgh was unable to take advantage of the extra player.
As is the case with a SUNYAC soccer match that ends tied after the two overtime periods, the two teams went to a penalty kick shootout to determine who would get the tiebreaker if both are tied in the standings come tournament seeding time.
Both teams matched kick-for-kick through the first seven before Plattsburgh keeper Andy Heighington (Simcoe, Ontario/Simcoe School) made a stop of a shot by Oneonta's
Larry Pestana (Valhalla/Valhalla). Sophomore John Martin (Palmyra, VA/Covenant School) ended the game in near dark conditions for the Cardinals when he converted his attempt for the 8-7 final in the shootout.
Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow at home when they host Potsdam for another SUNYAC match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
