ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The strong start to the season continued for Oneonta women's tennis, as they defeated Fredonia in SUNYAC play, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts. Oneonta swept the doubles matches for the sixth time this season, then they won all six singles courts in straight sets. The win boosted the Red Dragons record to 7-0 this season, 3-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. It is Oneonta's best start since the 2021-22 season, when the Red Dragons started off 7-0 and eventually won the SUNYAC title.
"Another great conference win today as we swept both singles and doubles in straight sets," said Head Coach
Brian Roser. "This sets us up well for a tough matchup against a Plattsburgh team that beat us last year."
In doubles play, sophomore duo
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) won the first court for Oneonta with a 6-1 set against Emily Solazzo and Amelia Stathatos on court three. Junior
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and sophomore
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) clinched the doubles point on court two, beating Allison Bartoszek and Rylyn Tunstall, 6-2. Senior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and junior
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory over Lucy Prevet and Gabbi Farr on court one. Peck and Cripe are now 7-0 this season, while Glaviano and Jimenez are 5-0, and Plue and Rufrano are 5-1.
"It was awesome to see the girls take care of business and keep the momentum going," Coach Roser continued. "You couldn't ask for a better start to the season – 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference!"
Not a single Red Dragon allowed their opponent to win five games in a single set, winning each court comfortably in straight sets. Cripe and Jimenez each won their respective court by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Cripe defeated Farr on court two, while Jimenez bested Solazzo on court five. Jimenez has won her past four singles matches to improve to 4-1 this season, and Cripe elevated her singles record to 5-0.
Plue outplayed Bartoszek on court three, 6-1, 6-2, and Peck cruised past Prevet on court one, 6-3, 6-1. The win was Plue's fourth out of the past five matches, as her record now sits at 5-2. On the top court, Peck is 6-1 in singles play this season.
Rufrano and freshman
Reagan Knapp (/) wrapped up the match with a pair of 6-4, 6-2 victories. Rufrano handled Tunstall on court four, and Knapp overwhelmed Stathatos on court six. Rufrano amplified her singles record to 4-2, while Knapp raised hers to 3-1.
The Red Dragons are back on the courts on Saturday, September 26, for a SUNYAC match against Plattsburgh at 12 pm at the Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts.
