ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) released the conference's women's tennis end of season awards including the Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player, Doubles Team of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams as voted on by the conference coaches, Tuesday afternoon.
Oneonta women's tennis senior captain
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) received the Peter J. Cahill Co-MVP award. She and junior captain
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were also named the SUNYAC Doubles Team of the Year. The Red Dragons totaled four All-SUNYAC honorees with Cripe, Peck, junior
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), and sophomore
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta).
"I couldn't be happier that these four individuals were recognized for their amazing achievements, which directly contributed to our team's success this fall," said Head Coach
Brian Roser. "Having the conference Co-MVP and the Doubles Team of the Year shows both the high level of talent on this roster and how much we've grown since last season."
Peck became the first Red Dragon in program history to receive the MVP award. She and Cripe also became the first Oneonta duo to earn the Doubles Team of the Year honor.
Cripe and Peck both earned SUNYACs First Team recognition for singles and doubles. Plue was selected to the Second Team for singles and doubles, and Rufrano was named to the Second Team for doubles. It is the second time Cripe and Peck have earned All-Conference status, while it is the first time for Plue and Rufrano in their collegiate careers.
"A special congratulations to Haley for earning MVP honors," said Coach Roser. "Playing at the No. 1 singles all season, defeating every top player in the conference, and remaining undefeated through the conference tournament proved she truly is the top player in the SUNYAC."
Peck competed on the top court in every match and went 8-2 overall in singles play. She posted a 4-1 singles record against conference opponents, including a walk-off, match-clinching victory on the road against Cortland. In the postseason, the senior Red Dragon went 1-0 in singles play, defeating her Oswego opponent in the Championship, 6-4, 6-3. Peck was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament singles team for her performance.
"Huge congratulations to Haley and Annika on earning the Doubles Team of the Year," Coach Roser continued. "Winning that award at the No. 1 doubles spot is no easy feat, and going undefeated through the conference tournament proved just how dominant they are."
Cripe and Peck were 9-2 as a duo on the top court in doubles, with a 3-2 record in conference play. The Oneonta tandem also earned a spot on the conference's All-Tournament doubles team following a 6-1 victory versus Cortland in the semifinals and a 6-0 bagel win against Oswego in the final.
In singles competition, Cripe played each match on court two and finished the fall season with an 8-1 record overall, while going 4-1 in the league to earn her All-Conference honor. In the SUNYAC tournament, the Red Dragon junior went 2-0 to be named to the All-Tournament singles team. Cripe bested her Cortland opponent, 6-1, 6-0, then she redeemed herself from her lone loss on the season against Oswego's Leah Bell and defeated Bell in the Championship, 6-3, 6-4.
"Congratulations to Taylor and Kiersten on earning Second Doubles, and to Taylor for earning Second Team Singles honors as well!" Coach Roser exclaimed. "They were consistently solid for us all fall."
Plue and Rufrano played all their doubles matches on court two for Oneonta, posting a 7-2 record overall with a 4-1 record in SUNYAC play. Two of the duo's conference victories were 6-0 bagel sets.
For singles play, Plue ended the fall season with an overall record of 7-4 and 3-2 against conference opponents. She primarily competed on court three and won five matches, while she went 2-0 on court two with wins against Utica and Sage. In the SUNYAC tournament, Plue won her semifinals singles match against Cortland's Reaghan Hughes, 6-3, 6-4.
"We are excited to build off this momentum as we head into our spring season!" Coach Roser concluded.
The Red Dragons finished the fall season with an overall record of 9-2. Oneonta went 4-1 in the SUNYAC, secured the two seed in the conference tournament and advanced to the finals. The team will return to action on Sunday, February 21, when they travel to RIT for the start of the spring season.
