Women's Tennis Tripped Up at Oswego in Regular Season Finale

Red Dragons Clinch Two Seed for Next Weekend's SUNYAC Tournament

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oneonta women's tennis team finished the fall season dropping a 7-0 conference decision to Oswego during SUNYAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons eight-game win streak comes to an end as they wrap up the regular season 8-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Lakers finished 5-0 in the SUNYAC and 10-2 this season.

"Tough day today on the road," said Head Coach Brian Roser. "Hopefully we'll see Oswego again in the conference finals next weekend and get another shot at them."

Sophomore Kiersten Rufran and junior Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had the only Red Dragon doubles win on court two with a 6-0 bagel set against Kate Hayes and Isabella Eason. The win elevated the duo's record to 7-1 this season.

The Lakers took the final two doubles courts in a pair of close matches to secure the doubles point. On the No 1 court, senior Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and junior Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) fell 6-4 to Leah Bell and Emily DeLuca. Sophomores Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) came up short to Avery Borman and Aubrey Salati on court three, 6-3.

"Nice job to Kiersten and Taylor, who got an easy 6-0 win at second doubles," Coach Roser continued. "Overall, proud of our girls for clinching the two seed going into SUNYAC playoffs. We're a much improved team from last year."

In singles play, Peck was the only Red Dragon to take a set from the Lakers. She started off strong with a 6-3 first set against Borman on the top court, but ultimately fell 6-3, 10-8 in the next two sets. Plue and Rufrano were close to forcing a third set in their respective singles matches, but Oswego was victorious with straight sets in both. Plue fell to DeLuca on court three, 6-0, 7-5, as Rufrano dropped 6-2, 7-5 to Eason on court four.

Oneonta plays next on Friday, October 16th in the SUNYAC Semifinals in Binghamton. They slotted into the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 Cortland in a postseason Battle of the Red Dragons at 4 pm.
