Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Northeast Regional Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team had a few members travel to Skidmore College to compete at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships this weekend. Senior Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil), juniors Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip), Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), and sophomore Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) represented the Red Dragons. Plue and Rufrano recorded a win as a duo in the doubles B Draw.

"So proud of our women who competed at ITAs this weekend," Head Coach Brain Roser exclaimed. "A huge congratulations to Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), who competed in the B Draw and picked up a big 8-6 win against a solid RIT team! They followed that up with a tight, back-and-forth match against the host and top Liberty League contender, Skidmore. They played at an exceptionally high level, and I couldn't be happier with their performance."

Rufrano and Plue faced RIT's Sona Hanumali and Amulya Settyvari in their opening doubles match and defeated the Tigers, 8-6. The Red Dragon duo then faced Skidmore's Mia Rosenberg and Margaret English. Plue and Rufrano came up short, 8-5, to the eventual B Draw runners-up.

"Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) faced tough draws in both singles and doubles, but I'm really happy with their effort," Coach Roser continued. "They made every game a fight against some of the best players in the northeast."

Cripe and Peck faced NYU's Norah Staunton and Emma Kast in doubles play, and fell to the Violets, 8-1.

In singles play, Peck went up against Skidmore's Nandini Chandra and dropped straight 6-1 sets. Cripe was bested in her singles match by RIT's Kai Wells, 6-3, 6-2.

"It's great to see this level of competition as we head back into conference play this Monday and look to stay undefeated!" Coach Roser concluded.

The Red Dragons are back in SUNYAC action when they face Plattsburgh on Monday, October 5, at Union College at 4 pm.
