BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- In a tightly contested non-conference match, the Oneonta field hockey team fell to Brockport, 1-0, on the road Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons were held scoreless despite creating several opportunities throughout the match, including four penalty corners and four shots in the fourth period. Oneonta moved to 2-3 on the season, while Brockport improved to 5-1.
"We competed and fought until the final whistle," said Head Coach
Kelly Kingsbury. "We were on the wrong side of a few key moments tonight that were uncontrollable, but that's part of the game unfortunately. I'm proud of our fight tonight."
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles seized opportunity at 43:29 in the third period. Olivia McClaine scored the lone goal of the match off assists from Emily Nestor and Lauren Mastromarco to give Brockport a 1-0 advantage heading into the final period.
Oneonta created chances to even the score in the fourth period. The Red Dragons obtained penalty corners at 50:21 and 51:32, with junior
Nora Trimarchi (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and senior
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) each getting a shot on goal that was saved by Brockport's goalkeeper. Oneonta earned two more penalty corners in the final two minutes. Senior
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) and junior
Isabella Cunha (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) both had shots on goal at 58:49 and 58:54, but both were turned away. Howell had another shot blocked with just over 20 seconds remaining.
Freshman
Eva Klessel (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville) played all 60 minutes in goal for Oneonta and finished with five saves. Howell led the Red Dragons with three shots, while junior
Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y./Arlington) recorded two shots. Cunha, Trimarchi and Draper each had one shot on goal.
Oneonta finished with nine total shots and six shots on goal, while Brockport recorded 11 shots and six shots on goal. The Golden Eagles had 10 penalty corners to the Red Dragons eight.Â
Oneonta field hockey will face Misericordia at home on Wednesday, September 23, at 6 pm for another non-conference matchup.
