CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's track & field team wrapped up the first day of the Cortland Classic on Friday evening. The Red Dragon competed in multiple events, with multiple athletes setting personal bests.
Starting on the track, freshman Tyler Masiello (Pleasantville, NY/Westlake) set a personal best of 10:40.00 to place fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Xander Kunz (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) led the Oneonta distance group in the 1,500, running a personal best of 4:05.47 to place fourth. Junior Jonathan McGwyne-Dantis (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) had a personal record of 4:15.33 for 10th, while junior Chris Schimkus (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) was 11th at 4:15.89.
Oneonta had two hurdlers reach the 110-meter finals, with senior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) winning the prelims at 14.65. Junior Jamar Matthew (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon Stream Academy) advances to the finals by taking seventh at 15.74.
Oneonta's 4x400 of Jacob Prentice (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley), Matthew, Cam Spears (Bronx, NY/Monroe Woodbury), and Justin Berkowitz (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) set an AARTFC qualifying mark of 3:19.33.
Moving to the field events, senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) grabbed seventh in the hammer throw at 48.77 meters. Junior Eljah Cruz placed tenth at 48.03 meters.
In the javelin, senior Jackson Sergeant (Pearl River, NY/Clarkstown South) posted a personal record of 39.16 meters for fourth overall. Senior Drew Obernesser (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) took sixth (38.80 meters), while junior Connor Vredenburgh (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge) finished tenth (35.07 meters.
Oneonta concludes the Cortland Red Dragon Open on Saturday, April 18, at 9 a.m.
