MAHWAH, N.J. - The Oneonta men's track & field team opened the outdoor season by placing third out of 25 teams at the Ramapo College Invitational over the weekend. The Red Dragons scored 76.5 points, while Ramapo won the meet with 103.
In the 100-meter prelims, sophomore Alex Darrigo (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) placed third at 11.10, while senior Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was tenth at 11.32. Junior Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) ran a personal best of 11.36 for 11th.
Senior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) reached the 110-meter hurdle finals after a 15.47 in the prelims. He then placed third in the finals at 15.15. Freshman Jacob Prentice (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) ran a personal best of 23.00 to take seventh in the 200-meter. Darrigo had a personal record of 23.01 for eight overall.
Sophomore Justin Berkowitz (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) placed third in the 400-meter hurdle finals at 58.35, while freshman Christopher Cordero finished fourth at 58.55.
In the 800-meter, freshman Nick Petro (Peru, NY/Peru) crossed fifth at 1:58.32.
Freshman Xander Kunz (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) led Oneonta in the 1,500-meter with a sixth-place finish at 4:08.56. Junior Lucas Berg (Nyack, NY/Nyack) ran a personal best of 4:11.21 for ninth. Junior Noah Pickard (Batavia, NY/Batavia) had a personal best of 4:16.54 to finish 13th.
Freshman Tyler Masiello (Pleasantville, NY/Westlake) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:43.41.
Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) went for fifth in the discus at 39.67 meters, and junior Justin Baldwin (Cato, NY/Cato-Meridian) was sixth at 39.16 meters. Junior Elijah Cruz (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush Central) led Oneonta in the hammer throw at 48.38 meters, while Eckberg grabbed eighth at 43.05 meters. Cruz also placed eighth in the shot put at 13.47 meters.
In the high jump, junior Jayden Tsoi (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla High School) cleared 1.83 meters for second place. Junior Jack Sergeant took fifth at 1.68 meters. Tsoi also went eighth in the long jump at 6.24 meters. Sophomore Gabriel Schoonmaker (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) hit 6.18 meters for ninth overall. Schoonmaker placed eighth in the triple jump at 12.64 meters.
Senior Drew Obernesser (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) placed eighth in the javelin at 42.80 meters.
Oneonta's 4x800 relay of Kunz, Berg, Colin Gerbsch (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus), and Pickard placed second at 8:21.97. The 4x400 of Berkowitz, Jamar Matthew (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon Stream Academy), Cam Spears (Bronx, NY/Monroe Woodbury), and Cordero was third at 3:39.33.
Oneonta next competes at the Cortland Red Dragon Open on Friday, April 3, at 1 p.m.
