ONEONTA, N.Y. - Junior Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) earned a selection to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this week and will represent the Red Dragons in the long jump on March 12. The championships will be held March 13-14 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, AL, with competition beginning at 11:00 a.m. on both days. The long jump is set to start at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
"We are very excited for Isaiah and proud of the season he's been having," said Oneonta track & field head coach Chris Wilber. "He set a new standard for himself in preparing for this season, and it showed when he jumped 7.22m on his very first jump of the season! He's continued to stay focused and achieved seven jumps over seven meters, which is a terrific accomplishment after breaking the outdoor school record last year with a 6.96m. We are excited for him to get the opportunity to compete at the Indoor National Championship with the best that division has to offer!"
Slater becomes the second long jumper in program history to travel to nationals and joins Matthew Neubauer '19, who competed in 2018.
Slater ranks 16th in Division III after jumping 7.24 meters at the Ithaca Quad Meet on January 17. He is only the second Red Dragon to clear 7.00 meters and has the second-best mark in program history, only behind Neubauer at 7.27 meters. Slater won the long jump at five meets this season, and hit over 7.00 meters in five of nine meets he competed in.
