GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team were bested on the road against William Smith, 7-0, Saturday afternoon. The non-conference result dropped the Red Dragons to 5-10 overall, while the Herons improved to 1-0 this season.
Oneonta had a chance to secure the doubles match point with wins on courts one and three, however William Smith came away with both courts for the eventual sweep. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) traded games with Haley Levine and Grace Magna on the No. 1 court, but Levine and Magna took the match, 6-4. Sophomore

Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) had an identical battle on court three against Lizzy Leg and Elizabeth Gardner, where Leg and Gardner sneaked by with a 6-4 decision. Freshmen duo
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) were tripped up on court two, 6-1, by Maddy Buck and Marin Montagne.
In singles play, the Herons took all six matches in straight sets. Peck faced Mae Kellersman on the No. 1 court, and Kellersman had the advantage for a 6-2, 6-1 final. On court six, Fowler dropped her first set to Anna Nigro, 6-1. The Red Dragon sophomore went toe-to-toe with the Heron in the second set, and the two went into a set tiebreaker where Nigro slipped by for the match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
Glaviano fell to Kaitlyn Hardy on court four in straight 6-1 sets, while Plue and Lyons respectively fell on courts two and five, 6-0, 6-1. Jimenez was defeated by Bethany Walker on court three, 6-0, 6-0.
Oneonta is back in action on Sunday, March 8, for a road match against Yeshiva at 5 pm.
