BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's track & field team opened the first day of the SUNYAC Indoor Championships on Friday, with the Red Dragons sitting fourth with 12 points. Cortland leads the meet with 88 points.
Action began with the heptathlon, where senior Jackson Sergeant (Pearl River, NY/Clarkstown South) is currently third with 2,345 points. He placed second in the 60-meter dash at 7.49, and was third in the shot put at 10.05 meters. He competes in the final three events tomorrow morning.
In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) won the prelims at 8.13 to reach tomorrow's finals.
In the 400-meter race, sophomore Justin Berkowitz (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) was tenth at 51.63, while freshman Jacob Prentice (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) ran a 51.79 for 11th overall.
Junior Kejhaune Lester (Castleton, NY/Columbia) took first in the 60-meter dash prelims at a personal best of 6.83. He will also compete in the 200-meter finals after taking fourth in the prelims at a personal best of 22.23.
Junior Noah Pickard (Batavia, NY/Batavia) crossed 15th in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:34.22.
Oneonta DMR of Xander Kunz (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge), Colin Bresnihan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), Nick Petro (Peru, NY/Peru), and Gabe Burns (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) won bronze at 10:46.20.
In the triple jump, junior Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) placed sixth at 13.56 meters, while senior Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) took seventh at 13.36 meters. Sophomore Gabriel Schoonmaker (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) finished 11th at 13.09 meters.
Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) hit 15.55 meters in the weight throw for eighth overall. Junior Connor Vredenburgh (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge) took 14th at 14.73 meters.
Oneonta continues the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, February 28, starting with the heptathlon at 10:30 a.m.
