CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team fell on the road to St. Lawrence, 7-0, in non-conference play Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped to 5-9 this season with the result, while the Saints improved to 2-0 overall.Â
Freshman
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) had the closest match with a battle on court five in singles play against Alexandra Fuller. The two traded games and went into a set tiebreaker where the back-and-forth play continued, and eventually Glaviano defeated Fuller, 9-7, for the first set. The Saint bounced back and came away with the second set then Fuller took the third set for the match, 6-7 (7-9), 6-0, 10-4.
Freshman
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) secured a couple of games in each set of her singles match against Abigail Sicuranza on court No. 4, but Sicuranza took the match, 6-2, 6-3. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) both dropped their singles matches on courts one and two, respectively, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman
Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) was defeated in straight 6-1 sets to Kate Butler on court No. 6, and freshman
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) was bested by Sarah Oldland on court No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.
St. Lawrence started the match with three wins in doubles play to secure the doubles match point. Glaviano and Lyons gave Butler and Oldland a scare on court three, but the Saints took the match, 6-3. Peck and Plue fell to Ellie Fritz and Sicuranza on the No. 1 court, 6-1, while Jimenez and Rufrano fell to Fuller and Maya Stepic on court two, 6-2.
Oneonta returns to action on Saturday, February 28, for a road match against William Smith starting at 3 pm.
