UTICA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's track & field team traveled to the Utica Fast Trax Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The meet opened with the 5,000-meter race, where sophomore Vincent DiStefano (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West) finished seventh overall in 16:59.31.
Senior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) placed second in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with an AARTFC qualifying time of 8.50. He then won the finals at 8.38. Junior Jamar Matthew (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon Stream Academy) was sixth in the prelims at 8.84 and seventh in the finals at 9.04.
In the 60-meter dash, junior Mark Cappelino (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) reached the finals after an eighth-place finish in the prelims at a personal record of 7.27. He then set another personal best of 7.18 in the finals, finishing sixth. Senior Cam Spears (Bronx, NY/Monroe Woodbury) placed fifth in the prelims at 7.20 and was seventh in the finals at 7.19.
Junior Lucas Berg (Nyack, NY/Nyack) took ninth in the mile at 4:37.55, while freshman Tyler Masiello (Pleasantville, NY/Westlake) placed 11th at 4:40.32.
In the 300-meter, freshman Faustin O'Neill (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) finished sixth at 38.79. Matthew set a personal best of 51.49 in the 400-meter to finish sixth overall. Freshman Nick Petro (Peru, NY/Peru) crossed tenth at 52.79.
Freshman Xander Kunz (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) led Oneonta with a second-place finish in the 800-meter, while freshman Aidan Mann (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) took fifth at 2:10.39.
Sophomore Colin Bresnihan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) competed in the 200-meter sprint and finished ninth at 23.09. Freshman Jacob Prentice (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) earned 12th at 23.33.
Oneonta had strong showings in the relay events. Spears, freshman Amir Mcceachin, senior Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), and junior Kejhaune Lester (Castleton, NY/Columbia) won with an AARTFC qualifying time of 1:32.41. The group of Prentice, Bresnihan, Matthew, and senior Nick Darrigo (Albany, NY/Guilderland) also qualified for the AARTFC meet after placing second at 1:32.79.
Oneonta performed well in the field events, with junior Elijah Cruz (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush Central) hitting a personal record of 15.84 to earn fourth in the weight throw. Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) took sixth at 15.68 meters. Cruz finished ninth in the shot put at 13.42 meters, and Eckberg placed 13th with a throw of 12.99 meters.
Junior Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) won the long jump at 6.97 meters. In the triple jump, Jerome went 13.63 meters in the triple jump for second place. Sophomore Gabriel Schoonmaker (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) was sixth at 12.89 meters. Junior Jayden Tsoi (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla High School) placed ninth in the high jump at 1.75 meters.
Oneonta next competes at the Cornell Deneault Invitational on Saturday, February 21, at 10 a.m.
