Red Dragons Open New Year at Cornell Southern Tier Invite

ITHACA, N.Y. - After a month break, the Oneonta men's track & field team returned to action at the Cornell Southern Tier Invite on Saturday. The Red Dragons primarily featured their sprint, jumps, and throws crews.

The meet opened with the 60-meter hurdles, where junior Jamar Matthew (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon Stream Academy) placed eighth in the prelims at 8.87. Freshman Haywood Edwards (/) took ninth at a personal best of 8.89, while senior Jackson Sergeant (Pearl River, NY/Clarkstown South) was tenth at 9.09.

Oneonta had two runners reach the 60-meter finals. Sophomore Alex Darrigo (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) placed eighth in the prelims at 7.10 and then ran a personal best of 7.05 to take fourth in the finals. Senior Cam Spears (Bronx, NY/Monroe Woodbury) took seventh in the prelims at 7.10 and recorded a personal best of 7.05 to place fifth in the finals.

Senior Colin Gerbsch (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) ran a personal record of 4:44.91 in the mile to take 20th.

In the 300-meter, junior Kejhaune Lester (Castleton, NY/Columbia) finished ninth at 36.54, while Edwards crossed 13th at 36.94. Senior Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) ran a personal best of 36.99 for 14th, and freshman Jacob Prentice (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) took 16th at 37.05.

In the field events, junior Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) won the long jump at AARTFC qualifying mark of 7.14 meters. Jerome placed fourth at 6.36 meters, while sophomore Gabriel Schoonmaker (/) cleared 6.26 meters for fifth overall. Junior Tom Pinkowski (Groton, NY/Groton) finished second in the triple jump at 12.46 meters.

Junior Jayden Tsoi (North White Plains, NY/Valhalla High School) earned fourth in the high jump at 1.75 meters.

Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) led Oneonta in the weight throw at a personal best of 16.06 meters to finish third overall. The mark also qualifies for the AARTFC Regional Championships. He then threw a personal record of 13.66 meters to take eighth in the shot put. Junior Connor Vredenburgh (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) went for ninth in the weight throw at a personal best of 13.05 meters and had a personal record 11.51 meters in the shot put for 13th overall.

Oneonta next competes at the Ithaca Quad Meet on Saturday, January 17.
