ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team dropped their SUNYAC match against Plattsburgh on Saturday, then the women were tripped up at Misericordia on Sunday. The Red Dragons fell to the Cardinals, 5-2, and the Cougars, 4-3, as the team moved to 3-5 this season and 0-3 in conference play. Sophomore
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) finished the week 3-1 overall, 2-0 in singles play, while freshman
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) went 2-1 overall, 1-0 in singles play.
Oneonta 2, Plattsburgh 5
Plattsburgh earned the doubles point over Oneonta by taking all three doubles courts. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and Cripe were defeated by Ava Carey and Jacklin Mitchell on court No. 1, 6-4, and Glaviano and freshman
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) were bested by Kristy Cantwell and Abigail Macdougal on court No. 3, 6-4. Sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and freshman
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) went back and forth into a tiebreaker on court No. 2 against Carmen Marino and Ava Perry, but Marino and Perry took the match, 7-6 (7-4).
Cripe and freshman
Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) won their respective singles matches against the Cardinals. Cripe bageled Carey in the first set on court No. 2 before she defeated her in the second set for a 6-0, 6-3 win. Lyons had a close contest on court No. 6 against Marena Tubo, but she withstood Tubo for a straight set victory, 6-4, 6-3.
Plue came up short in a tough battle against Perry on the No. 3 singles court. After she dropped the first set, Plue forced a super tiebreaker with a 6-2 second set, however Perry came away with the match, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Peck was tripped up on the No. 1 court against Mitchell in straight 6-4 sets, and Jimenez fell to Marino on court No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
Oneonta 3, Misericordia 4
Oneonta gained the doubles point over Misericordia in split decision fashion. Peck and Cripe ran the No. 1 court and upended Erin Cridge and Samantha Wallitsch, 6-1. Rufrano and Glaviano teamed up on court No. 3, and they earned the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Morgan Slusser and Natalie Liebman. Plue and Jimenez were close to finishing the sweep in doubles play, but they came up short to Tessie Thomas and Emily Holtzapple on court No. 2, 6-4.
Cripe and Glaviano each won in singles play against their Cougar opponents. On court No. 2, Cripe beat Thomas in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Glaviano outlasted Liebman in straight sets on court No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
Misericordia took the remaining four singles courts to take the match. Peck and Jimenez each fell in third set tie breakers on courts No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. Peck won the first set against Cridge, 6-3, however Cridge took the second set then set three became a back-and-forth battle where Cridge took the match in a tiebreak, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8). Jimenez dropped a close first set to Holtzapple, 7-5, before she forced a third set with a 6-3 second set. In the third set, neither side could gain separation, and the match went into a tiebreaker where Holtzapple took the match, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8).
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, October 4, for a SUNYAC match on the road against Fredonia at 1 pm.
