HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Oneonta women's tennis team won two of the final three singles matches to walk away with a 4-3 road victory against Houghton, Tuesday evening. Freshmen
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) secured the match for the team as both recorded their first singles win as a Red Dragon. The Red Dragons improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Highlanders dropped to 3-3 overall.
Oneonta started the match strong by sweeping the doubles matches for the doubles point. Jimenez teamed up with sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) on the No. 2 court and bageled Zoe Zachery and Victoria Martinez, 6-0. Junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and sophomore
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) defeated Arija Grant and Sage Brinckerhoff on the No. 1 court, 6-3, and freshmen duo
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) beat Abigail Lloyd and Angelina Miller on the No. 3 court with an identical 6-3 score.
In singles play, Plue fought hard for a split set victory on the No. 3 court against Clancey Cockle. Cockle took the first set before Plue battled to win set two in a tiebreak, then she overpowered Cockle in set three to take the match, 0-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1. For her first singles win, Jimenez bageled Zachery in the first set on court No. 4 as she won, 6-0, 6-1. Lyons recorded her first singles victory, and clinched the match for the Red Dragons, on court No. 6 against Lloyd, 6-2, 6-4.
Peck came up short in a split set decision on the No. 1 court to Brinckerhoff, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, and Cripe could not force a third set against Grant as she got tripped up in a second set tiebreak on the No. 2 court, 2-6, 6-7 (3-7).
The Red Dragons are back in action on Wednesday, September 24, for a non-conference match against Utica at 4 pm on Dr. Heissan's Courts.
