Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA. -- The Oneonta field hockey team's win streak ends at six after they dropped a rainy double-overtime battle at Misericordia, 1-0, Tuesday evening. Neither team could find the back of the cage by the end of regulation, then the host team scored midway through the second overtime period to take the match. Senior Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) recorded nine saves for the Red Dragons as the result moved both them and the Cougars to 6-2 on the season.

The lone goal was scored at 74:01 in the second overtime period by Misericordia's Celeste Hoffman. Abigail O'Donnell stole a pass deep in Oneonta's territory, brought it into the shooting circle, then passed it to Hoffman for the score.

The Red Dragons had a handful of chances to get on the board throughout the non-conference match with junior Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and senior Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each recording two shots on goal. Howell had the first shot of the game for the team when she brought the ball into the circle for a shot from the wing at 11:38 in the first, but the Cougars keeper, Sarah Bogina, came out from the cage for the stop. Howell also had the final opportunity to score for Oneonta before the end of regulation, at 48:35 in the fourth, with a worm-burner, yet it was kick-saved by Bogina.

Miller recorded the only shot on goal in overtime for the Red Dragons and had a chance to end the game at 69:02, when she sent the ball off a penalty corner up to the top of the arc then she positioned herself next to the cage to get the rebound of a blocked shot, however when she gained possession for the shot, Bogina came in for the diving stop.

Out of the nine saves that were recorded for Leib, seven were made in the fourth quarter and in overtime, including a pair of head-first diving saves with less than four minutes left in regulation. The senior keeper currently has a .855 save percentage on the season.

Along with Leib's saves, junior Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) made a critical defensive save on Ashleigh Steele's shot at 66:44 in the first overtime period to keep the game scoreless.

The Cougars outshot the Red Dragons 27-7 in overall shots, 10-4 in shots on target, and they had a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Oneonta's next game is on Saturday, September 27, for the start of SUNYAC play when they host Morrisville at 1 pm on All College Field.
