ONEONTA, N.Y. - Five different Red Dragons scored as the Oneonta field hockey team earned a 10-0 victory over Morrisville to open SUNYAC play. Junior Ali Howell recorded a hat trick as the Red Dragons move to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. The Mustangs fall to 2-5 and 0-1 in the conference.
Oneonta scored the opening goal exactly a minute in from Howell to take a 1-0 lead. Senior goalie Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) stopped a shot from Kylee Noyes, and then Oneonta rattled off shots from senior Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Howell. The Mustangs' defense held, with Emmaly Noeller stopping back-to-back shots from fifth-year Caitlyn Caulfield (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) and junior Abby Draper. Howell connected on the rebound shot and found the back of the net at 12:17 to make it 2-0.
The Red Dragons scored four goals in the second quarter, with junior Olivia Bonelli (Kerhonkson, N.Y./Rondout Valley) scoring off an assist from Howell at 18:53. Howell assisted again less than two minutes later when sophomore Nina Contrera (Rochester, NY/Hilton) scored at 20:22 to make it 4-0. Another goal from Bonelli at 26:32 pushed Oneonta ahead 5-0. Freshman Maddie Woodcock (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) scored her first-career goal in the final second of the half off a pass from freshman Isabella Cunha (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) to take a six-goal lead.
Howell tallied her third goal at 34:10 to grab her hat trick. Scores from Contrera and junior Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) pushed the Red Dragons up 9-0 heading into the fourth.
Woodcock sealed the game with one more goal in the fourth from an assist by sophomore Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y.).
Leib finished the game with six saves, while Morrisville's Jillian Buczkowski had ten.
Oneonta outshot Morrisville 31-6 and held a 16-4 penalty corner advantage.
The Red Dragons next head to play at New Paltz on Sat. Oct. 4 at 12:30 p.m.
