Women’s Tennis Tripped Up in SUNYAC Opener at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team was bested in their first SUNYAC contest of the season against Oswego, 6-1, Saturday afternoon. Junior Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) was victorious in both her doubles and singles matches as the Red Dragons moved to 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in conference play, and the Lakers improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Oswego secured the doubles point by taking courts two and three in the match. Peck teamed up with sophomore Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) on court one and they defeated Emily DeLuca and Leah Bell, 6-3. Sophomore Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and freshman Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) came up short on court three, 6-3, and freshmen duo Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) fell on court two, 6-2.

Peck was the lone Red Dragon to win her singles match and earn a match point against the Lakers. The junior faced Avery Borman on the No.1 singles court and beat Borman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Rufrano dropped court No. 4 to DeLuca, 6-3, 6-1, and Cripe was subdued on court No. 2 to Sabrina Achki, 6-3, 6-0. Glaviano and Jimenez also fell in straight sets in their respective singles matches, while Plue had to retire in the second set of her match.

Oneonta is back in action on Tuesday, Saturday 23, for a non-conference road match against Houghton at 4 pm.
