Oneonta Takes Down Bethany in Five Sets

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team defeated Bethany 3-2 to conclude the Union/Russell Sage Crosstown Challenge on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Red Dragons move to 9-2 overall, while the Bison fall to 2-5.

Bethany used a 6-0 run in the first set to take a 9-4 lead. Junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) knocked in a kill and senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) tallied an ace to spur a 4-0 run. Another 4-0 span with kills from sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) and junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) gave the Red Dragons 13-11. Oneonta pulled away 19-14 following kills from McCabe and freshman Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia). A Morretta kill made it 23-17, and then McCabe sent in the set-winning kill to win 25-18.

Bethany took the following two sets, 27-25 and 25-21. Oneonta answered with a 25-20 victory in the fourth, using an 8-0 run to take a 16-8 lead. Manjos knocked in a kill to make it 19-10 before a 3-0 Bisons' run cut the lead to five. Bethany pulled within four before Welsh sent in the winning kill to force a fifth set.

The Red Dragons jumped out 7-0 in the fifth with two blocks from Morretta. Landversicht tallied two consecutive kills to take a 10-4 lead. Bethany cut the lead to 14-11 before Manjos gave Oneonta the match-winning kill.

Manjos recorded a career-high 13 kills with two blocks, while Landversicht added 12 kills, two aces, and two blocks. McCabe finished with ten kills and an ace. Senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) grabbed 11 digs and three aces, while freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had 43 assists, 11 digs, and three aces.

Morretta was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bethany's Averie Braymer recorded a match-high 19 kills with two aces. Isabella Poppelriter had ten kills and 14 digs.

Oneonta returns home to host Hartwick on Wed. Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
