HOBOKEN, NJ. -- The Oneonta volleyball team fell to Stevens Tech and Springfield College on the first day of the Stevens Quad, Friday afternoon. Oneonta was tripped up in three sets in their first match against Stevens, 18-25, 13-25, 14-25. Then they came up short in a five-set battle against Springfield, 25-23, 30-28, 19-25, 22-25, 13-15. The results moved the Red Dragons to 3-9 this season while the Ducks improved to 7-1 overall and the Pride to 8-0.
Junior
Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) finished the day with 19.5 points, recording 11 kills, three aces and 4.5 total blocks. Sophomore
Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) totaled 17 points in the two matches with 16 kills and a solo block, while senior
Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) ended with 13 kills and two block assists for 14 points.

Sophomore
Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) started the match against Stevens off with an ace before senior
Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) smacked a kill to keep the game tied. The Ducks then went on a 9-2 run to go up 11-4. The Red Dragons scored three straight points to make it a four-point game with a Landversicht ace and kills from freshman
Carsen Rittberger (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) and Welsh. Stevens slowly rebuilt their lead back to seven, 21-14. A kill from Morretta and Pugliese along with another ace from Meltz got Oneonta back to within five, 17-22, but Stevens recorded three of the next four points to take the set.
The Red Dragons got out to a 7-3 lead in the second set with two kills and an ace from Landversicht and kills from Pugliese and Welsh. The Ducks responded with a 14-2 rally to gain a 17-9 advantage. Pugliese and junior
Kayla Kean (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa Central) each slapped in a kill for Oneonta, but Stevens continued to extend their lead to 21-11. Landversicht recorded two more kills before the host institution took the second set.
Senior
Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) served an ace at the beginning of set three as Oneonta had the set tied at three apiece. Stevens then went on a 9-2 stretch to go ahead 12-5. Despite a few errors, the Ducks grew their lead to 17-8. Pugliese spiked a pair of kills in while Landversicht had one to keep it a nine-point game, then Stevens scored four of the next five points to go up 24-12. Welsh and Kean each tallied another kill before Stevens clinched the match point.
Landversicht finished the match with five kills, two aces, and 1.5 total blocks. Pugliese recorded six kills, while Rittberger totaled four kills and a block assist. Welsh ended with four kills for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta 2, Springfield 3
Pugliese and sophomore
Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) kicked off the first set against Springfield each with a kill as Oneonta took a slight 5-4 lead. The Pride gained a two-point edge, then the Red Dragons went on a 7-3 rally, that included a kill from Pugliese and Manjos, for a 14-12 advantage. Springfield went back up two before Oneonta went on a 6-1 run to go up 21-18 with kills from Welsh and freshman
Maddie Saladino (Melville, NY/St. Anthony's), and a block from Welsh and Morretta. The match became tied at 22 until Oneonta scored three of the next four points with Welsh recording the set-winning kill.
The Red Dragons jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set with kills from Manjos, Landversicht, and Pugliese. Springfield worked their way back into the match, though a Manjos kill and Slattery ace put Oneonta back up five, 13-8. The Pride made it a two-point game until an ace from Landversicht and kills from Welsh and Morretta put the Red Dragons ahead 18-13. Morretta slapped in two kills while sophomore
Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) served an ace, but Springfield brought themselves within three with a 7-4 run. Pertichik slammed in a kill to put the team up three, until the Pride went on a 5-1 stretch for a 25-24 lead. Oneonta capitalized on an error, then Pugliese struck a kill before Landversicht and Welsh blocked a shot to take a 27-26 lead. Springfield tied the game at 27, and again at 28, then the Red Dragons closed out the set on a pair of Pride errors.
Springfield managed to get a 6-3 lead in the third set before Oneonta tied it at seven with kills from Welsh and Landversicht. The Pride slipped out to a 13-10 advantage, then the Red Dragons tied it with an ace from junior
Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate). Springfield recorded the next three points to start a 10-4 run to go up 23-17. After Morretta blocked an attack and Manjos earned a kill, the Pride took the set with a kill.
A kill from Rittberger and Landversicht and a Morretta block helped the Red Dragons go up 7-3 in the fourth set. Springfield tied the game at eight then Oneonta sparked a 6-1 rally, that included an ace from Meltz and Slattery and a kill from Pugliese, for a 14-9 lead. Once it became a one-point game, Landversicht, Welsh, and Rittberger smacked in three straight kills to go up 19-15, however the Pride did not go away and tied the set at 21. Oneonta scored off a serving error before Springfield recorded four straight points to force a fifth set.
With Springfield up 6-4 in the final set, Morretta blocked a shot that ignited a 5-1 run that was capped off by a Meltz kill to go ahead 9-7. Pugliese and Manjos maintained the lead with a couple kills, then the Pride recorded three straight points for a 13-11 edge. Oneonta made it a one-point game twice off a pair of errors, however, with a 14-13 lead, Springfield put the game away with a kill.Â
Landversicht recorded eight kills, an ace and 3.0 total blocks against Springfield. Pugliese finished with 10 kills and a solo block, while Manjos totaled 10 kills and a block assist. Welsh tallied nine kills and two block assists, and Morretta had five kills and totaled 3.5 blocks.
Oneonta wraps up the Stevens Quad against William Paterson on Saturday, September 19, at 11 am.
